Letter: Making a rational choice on vaccination

So, out of roughly seven million Americans who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, there were six reported cases of blood clots including one or two deaths. Is that a reason for not getting vaccinated? In today’s New York Times (4/14), it was mentioned that Meritus Health in Hagerstown, Md., had given out 50,000 doses of all three vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson) without any reported major reactions. Compare those dose statistics with the virus toll here. Butte County, with a population

Yeas and nays

Let’s start things off this week with a shot — 2,300 of them to be exact. The clinic at Frederick Community College, which is not new, started giving out a larger number of vaccine doses this week thanks to a partnership with the state. While it’s not a state-operated facility like ones in Hagerstown, Baltimore and elsewhere, the FCC site is now supported by the state. On Tuesday, the clinic at FCC provided 2,300 people with their first dose of the Moderna vaccine. That’s a number worth celebrating.

Vaccine patriotism takes on vaccine globalism

When the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines first proved their efficacy, preventing nearly 95 percent of coronavirus infections in those who got the shots in test trials, a vexing issue immediately arose. Who should get priority in receiving these life-saving shots? Generally speaking, the answer, while differing slightly from state to state, was that those most vulnerable to the virus, and those most vital to battling it, should be inoculated first. The most vital were doctors, nurses and emergency medical personnel

A Week of Discouraging Coronavirus Pandemic Developments in Canada

I was feeling vaguely guilty this week when heading out to a sports complex in suburban Ottawa for my vaccination. As I write this, only 19 percent of Canadians have shared my experience and just before my vaccine day arrived, tens of thousands of vaccination appointments in Manitoba and Ontario were canceled. My appointment was also during the same week in which there were frightening and discouraging news related to the pandemic and the vaccines that promise to beat it back.
