Department has difficulty retaining attorneys because of low salaries ASOTIN — Asotin County Prosecutor Ben Nichols made a case Monday for raising starting salaries for new attorneys in his office. During an Asotin County Commission meeting, Nichols told county officials his department is losing deputy prosecutors on a regular basis because they can make significantly more money in other counties or in private practice.

The sentencing date for a former Asotin County judge has been moved to 9 a.m. July 11 in Superior Court due to the presiding judge’s availability. Last month, 58-year-old Scott Gallina pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with sexual motivation on the first day of his trial.

Ivy Medical starts work on May 23 ASOTIN — The Asotin County Jail will have a new medical services provider as of May 23. The commissioners approved a contract with Ivy Medical on Monday for $135,091 per year. Dr. Sherry Stoutin is the medical director of the group, which also provides services to jails in Idaho.

Gary Lee Hanchett, 85, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2022, at Prestige Care of Clarkston from lung cancer. He was born to Hale and Frieda (Hulse) Hanchett on Jan. 19, 1937, in Clarkston. Gary graduated from Asotin High School in 1955, the third generation to do so.

Woman pleads not guilty to bringing drugs into jail

ASOTIN — A female inmate who allegedly smuggled fentanyl into the Asotin County Jail by anchoring them to her dentures has pleaded not guilty to her charges. Kelsy J. Darst, 40, was arraigned Monday before Asotin County Superior Court Judge Brooke Burns. She is charged with possession of narcotics within a correctional facility and intent to deliver fentanyl.

Darst, 40, faces felony drug charges ASOTIN — A female inmate at the Asotin County Jail was treated for a fentanyl overdose Monday after another woman allegedly smuggled the drugs in by anchoring them to her dentures and hiding them in her throat. According to court documents, Jamie L. Hopper, 38, received lifesaving measures at the jail, including two doses of Narcan.
