CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - Chesterfield County is hoping to buy the shuttered Southside Speedway, which closed in December after 60 years of racing. The county wants to spend $5 million for the roughly 41-acre site and use it to expand the nearby River City Sports Complex.
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - Rides with ‘Hanover Dash’ will soon cost you once again. This service provides rides for medical appointments, errands, employment and formal social programs for those 60 and older and people with a disability. In the middle of the pandemic, the $6 one-way trip fee was waived, but it’s coming back the first day of July.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - American Airlines has canceled hundreds of flights due to staffing shortages and bad weather. The airline is projecting 50 to 80 flight cancelations a day through mid-July. Nine out of the first 15 days of June had weather that impacted flights which in turn affected the crew’s schedules, often causing them to reroute, creating staffing shortages.
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - Chesterfield County Animal Services is hosting an adoption fair from June 19 to 26. Dogs and cats that have been in the shelter for a month or longer are up for adoption for $10. Check out their Facebook for more information.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Two dogs were killed on Sunday night in a house fire in Richmond. Crews were called to the scene in the 3700 block of Stockton Street around 10:17 p.m. At the scene, firefighters saw smoke coming from the front door and started their attack.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Residents can voice their thoughts about the new plan on the city center located in a part of downtown Richmond. The “City Center” draft plans are now available for the area between Broad and Leigh Streets, and Fifth and Tenth Streets.
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WWBT) - Police say a woman is being sought in connection to three robberies at a Target located in Colonial Heights. According to police, the suspect entered the store on three different occasions in May, placed items into a bag and walked through all points of sale without making a purchase.
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - A vehicle has overturned in the median along VA-288 south in Chesterfield. The incident occurred near the Hull Street Road exit. All southbound lanes and one northbound lane is closed. Drivers should expect delays.
Of the approximately 22.5 million tons of solid waste that facilities in the commonwealth handled during the calendar year, about 5.7 million tons came from other states. Maryland, at 2.4 million tons, was the biggest contributor, followed by New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

Richmond Public School District is hosting all of their graduation ceremonies at The Diamond, the time depending on the senior’s school. CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - A police chase went through two counties before ending with a man in handcuffs Saturday night. Police confirmed an officer attempted a traffic stop for expired registration just before 2 a.m. on Jefferson Davis Highway. Video sent in by a viewer showed the police chase that followed.
GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - A physical rehabilitation hospital in Goochland Co. is hosting a hiring event on Wednesday. The onsite interviews will include one-on-one time with the nurse manager and a tour of the facility. Interviews will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2000 Wilkes Ridge Drive in Ridge, Virginia.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Richmond Fire Department is holding an information session for prospective firefighters. The session will be held Thursday, June 24 from 5:30-8 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 308 North 24th Street. NEW KENT Co., Va. (WWBT) - The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office is searching for two men suspected of stealing from an ABC store. Deputies said two suspects went into the ABC store in Quinton on June 18 and stole over $1,000 worth of merchandise and store property.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Governor Northam says his hands are tied: He can’t extend eviction protections through executive order when the COVID-19 state of emergency ends July 1. The Legal Aid Justice Center (LAJC) and the Virginia Poverty Law Center (VPLC) sent a letter to Northam asking to extend State of Emergency protections for tenants until the General Assembly’s next session.
