Britain's longest-serving cricket umpire who oversaw matches in Retford for 20 years has returned to the crease for his 71st season

At 86, sprightly Keith Dibb is believed to be the oldest umpire in the country and has taken charge of around 1,000 matches over the course of his lifetime. The former medium bowler first caught the cricket bug at 13 when he joined a local team in North Yorkshire where he grew up.

The 70-year-old’s ‘Reverence’ sculpture was made a focal point of the £210m Glass Works development, and championing local arts and culture has been at the centre of Barnsley’s recent regeneration.

LEGENDARY retired cricket umpire Dickie Bird was thrilled to receive a special card from the Queen. Dickie, who will turn 89 in April, had written to Queen Elizabeth II regarding her upcoming 70th jubilee this year and was overjoyed to receive a ‘beautiful’ card in response.

DICKIE Bird had the best possible view of his friend’s Shane Warne’s most famous moment and was ‘completely stunned’ by the legendary cricketer’s death this week. Bird, the former umpire from Barnsley, was standing next to Warne when the Australian produced the ‘ball of the century’ to dismiss Mike Gatting with his first Ashes delivery.

Past and present Yorkshire and England cricketers were among the mourners at the funeral of Ray Illingworth. Former umpire Dickie Bird was one of those to pay tribute to the former Yorkshire, Leicestershire and England all-rounder, who died on Christmas Day aged 89. “It’s a very very sad day,” said Bird.
