DETROIT (AP) — A new campaign to help close Detroit’s digital divide will provide a monthly $50 internet access credit and one-time $100 subsidy for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet to eligible city residents. The EBB 313 program streamlines access to the Emergency Broadband Benefit, a federal program that subsidizes the cost of internet and technological devices for eligible households, which include those at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines or that participate in certain assistance programs.

A federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment Friday against a Toledo man for sex trafficking a minor. Derrick Murphy, 38, is charged with sex trafficking and transportation of a minor. He was arrested April 27. In April, law enforcement officers received information regarding the sexual exploitation of a minor victim in the Toledo and Detroit areas.

DETROIT (AP) — A former Michigan State University basketball star was ordered to remain in jail during his first court appearance on murder and other charges in Detroit. Defense attorney Andrew Abood asked for a bond, saying Keith Appling had always appeared in court in previous cases.

1 person shot after gunman fires into car at Downtown Cleveland intersection

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - One man was shot after a gunman fired into his car at the intersection of W. 9th Street and Superior Avenue Thursday afternoon. The shooting happened around 1 p.m. Cleveland police said the 23-year-old driver was stopped at the light when the suspect drove up next to him and fired shots into his vehicle at the busy intersection.

Pistons, NBA reportedly set to start 2021-22 regular season Oct. 19

The last two NBA seasons were upended due to the ongoing coronavirus. The 2019-20 season was suspended last March before it returned to action in the NBA Bubble last July in Orlando, Fl. In order to accommodate the playoffs, the 2020-21 schedule was pushed back with the NBA Draft taking place in November and the regular season beginning in December.

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — A Detroit suburb is defending the recent unveiling of a large mural of police officers holding hands with heads bowed in front of the American flag. Sterling Heights said it has no plans to remove the mural, despite regret expressed by the artist and an acknowledgment by the Detroit Institute of Arts, a partner in the project, that some people are offended by the image.
