TRAVIS COUNTY, TX — A Travis County inmate died at a local hospital over the weekend after he was found unresponsive in his cell, according to the county sheriff's office. Alexander McFarland, 31, of Austin was found unresponsive in his cell around 2:54 p.m. on July 11 by a corrections officer who was performing visual checks.

On July 13, the Travis County commissioner's court heard that, so far in 2021, there have been a total of 333 breakthrough COVID-19 cases. One week later, the commissioners were told that there have now been a total of 488 breakthrough cases, an increase of 155.

The City of Austin on Monday identified two potential sites under consideration to become sanctioned encampments for those experiencing homelessness. The sites are located at 3511 Manor Road in East Austin and 4011 Convict Hill Road in southwest Austin. Both properties will require rezoning to allow for the installation of prefabricated structures, or micro shelters.
A lightning strike sparked a house fire south of Austin Monday evening. According to the Austin Fire Department, the fire occurred on Windy Gap Drive before 5:30 p.m. AFD units responded alongside Emergency Services District #5. They said the fire was heavy in the attic when crews first arrived.
