Buhari Congratulates Joshua, Stays Silent On Sowore

President Buhari has congratulated Anthony Joshua over his defeat of Andy Ruiz Jr on Saturday, December 7, 2019.

On his Twitter account, Buhari saluted the heavyweight champion for his comeback victory and retaining his titles. “You have brought joy and celebration to millions of Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora; we are and will continue to be immensely proud of you” the President tweeted.

He further said “The downfall of a man is truly not the end of his life. There’s always another, and better day. This is a lesson we must all learn from Anthony Joshua, as a country.”

While Anthony Joshua’s victory has been trending on social media platforms in Nigeria, the re-arrest of political activist Omoyele Sowore has also been trending. Sowore who was re-arrested by the DSS on Friday, December 6, 2019 has sparked reactions locally and internationally including from the US State Department.

While a presidential aide has gone on record to say Sowore orchestrated the court drama to give the DSS a bad name, President Buhari stayed silent on the matter.

The Presidency has remained tight lipped over the matter despite widespread criticisms.

The silence of the executive arm of the government has led to online criticisms of certain high key figures in the Buhari administration such as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Federal Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola who are Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN).
