The University of Lagos is one of the Universities of repute in Nigeria. Founded in 1962 when the need for higher education was realised. This was in line with the Ashby Commission’s report, titled Investment in Education, which recommended the establishment of a new university in Lagos, the then Federal Capital, to provide education for students in Economics, Commerce, Business Administration, and Higher Management Studies.
The University’s main campus is located at Akoka, Yaba, while the Medical Campus of the College of Medicine is located a few kilometers from the main campus at Idi-Araba, Mushin, all on the Lagos mainland. The university has many other residential facilities and services for both staff and students.
The institution has fourteen academic units comprising a broad range of professional faculties and schools. Most faculties are located on the main campus except the Faculties of Pharmacy, Clinical Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences and Dental Sciences, which are located within the College of Medicine in Idi Araba. The College of Medicine is also the site of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
Since inception, the school has gone ahead to produce notable men and women who now hold top political and management positions across the country. Below we profile some of these men and women:
Prof. Yemi Osinbajo
The first man on our list here is the number two man in Nigeria presently, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.
Professor Yemi Osinbajo, born March 1957 is Nigeria’s Vice President, lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria who until his inauguration and swearing-in as Vice President in 2015 was a Senior Partner with SimmonsCooper Partners, a commercial law practice.
Professor Yemi Osinbajo studied law in the University between 1975-1978 where he obtained a Second Class Upper Degree thereafter proceeding on the mandatory one-year professional training at the Nigerian Law School. He was admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of Nigeria’s Supreme Court.
He would later become lecturer at the department of Public Law where he rose to the position of the Head Of Department before leaving the Citadel Of Education as a Senior Lecturer.
Next on our list is newly sworn-in Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila recently won his election as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Elected into the House first in 2003, and then re-elected in 2007, 2011, 2015 and then 2019 to represent Surulere 1 constituency of Lagos State.
Gbajabiamila was the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives in the 7th National Assembly and House leader in the 8th National Assembly.
He began his elementary education in Lagos at the Mainland Preparatory School and proceeded to Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos in 1973 for his secondary education.
Upon completion of his studies, he enrolled at the King Williams College Isle of Man, UK for his ‘A Levels’. He later returned to Nigeria where he attended University of Lagos as a law student. In 1983, after graduating with honors from the university he went on to the Nigerian Law School where he graduated and was called to Nigerian Bar in 1984.
Dr. Kayode Fayemi
A native of Isan-Ekiti in Oye Local Government of Ekiti State, Nigeria, he is the present governor of Ekiti state, a position he previously held between 2010 and 2014.
He resigned as the Minister of Solid Minerals Development on May 30, 2018 to contest for the Ekiti State governorship election for the second time.
Fayemi attended Christ’s School Ado Ekiti from 1975-1980 and received degrees in History, Politics and International Relations from the Universities of Lagos and Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria and his Doctorate in War Studies from the King’s College, University of London, England, specializing in civil-military relations.
Chief Willie Obiano
Born August 8, 2955, Chief Willie Obiano is a banker, technocrat, politician and the fourth Democratic Governor of Anambra State.
He received a bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from the University of Lagos in 1979 and a Master of Business Administration from the same university.
Mr. Udom Emmanuel is the present governor of Akwa Ibom State a position he has held since May 29, 2015.
Gov. Emmanuel holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Lagos in 1988 and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management.
Gboyega Oyetola is the present governor of Osun State, a position which is currently being contested by the PDP candidate in the 2018 gubernatorial candidate that brought him in.
Gov. Adegboyega Oyetola was born in Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State on September 29, 1954. He started his secondary education at Ifeoluwa Grammar School, Osogbo and graduated in 1972.
He then proceeded to the University of Lagos and graduated with a Bachelor of Science honours degree in Insurance in 1978. He then proceeded for his mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Potiskum, the capital city of present-day Yobe State, where he lectured at the Staff Training Centre between 1978 and 1979. He obtained his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Lagos in 1990.
Babajide Sanwo Olu
Mr. Babajide Sanwo Olu is the newly sworn in governor of Lagos State.
He is also a graduate of the University of Lagos, as well as the London Business School, Lagos Business School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Prior to his gubernatorial ambition, he was the Managing Director/CEO of Lagos State Property Development Commission (LSPDC).
Engineer Seyi Makinde is the newly sworn in governor of Oyo State in South-western Nigeria.
Makinde began his education at St Paul Primary School and completed his primary education at St Michael Primary School, Yemetu, Ibadan. His secondary education was at Bishop Phillips Academy, Monatan, Ibadan. In 1985, he gained admission to the University of Lagos (Unilag) where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
Another newly sworn in governor, this time of Imo State. He was the former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria.
Chief Ihedioha attended Town School Mbutu in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, and completed same at SDA Primary School Abule Oja, Yaba Lagos in 1976. He had his secondary education at St. Ephraim’s Secondary School, Owerrinta in present day Abia State. He then proceeded to the University of Lagos, Akoka-Yaba, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.SC) degree in Food Science and Technology, in 1988.
Mr Egbeyemi, presently the deputy governor of Ekiti State is a native of Ado-Ekiti and was born on May 8, 1944 to the family of the late Egbeyemi Alade and late Madam Tinubu Egbeyemi.
Mr Benedict Alabi
Presently the deputy governor of Osun state, Mr Benedict Alabi’s primary and higher institution run revolved largely around Oyo and Osun states.
He was born and nurtured in Ikire, headquarters of Irewole Local Government, Osun West Senatorial District of Osun State among a family of nine children whose father was a reputable administrator and mother, a business woman of great repute
He attended Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Ikire before proceeding to Baptist Grammar School, Ikire, Osun State and Lagos African Church Grammar School, Ifako-Agege. Thereafter, Olugboyega gained admission to Ibadan Polytechnic to study Banking in 1983.
He consolidated his knowledge further when he studied and obtained Bachelors Degree in Banking and Finance from Olabisi Onabanjo University Ogun State and a Masters degree in Economics (with specialization in International Development) from the prestigious University of Lagos.
Mrs Noimot Oyedele
An engineer by profession, Mrs. Noimot Oyedele is a consummate professional who served as a former General Manager (Business Development)/Acting Managing Director of Grenadines Homes Limited, she has also served as Graduate Engineer/ Project Manager at Ove Arup & Partners, London, UK.
She holds a Masters degree in Public Health Engineering from the Imperial College of Science & Technology London, UK, a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Lagos.
