Controversy stirred up social media this morning after a Twitter user took to the platform to narrate how a Deeper Life Church in Bayelsa suspended a couple’s wedding for eating from the same plate a week to their official (white) wedding. According to the user, the suspension notification came while their traditional marriage was going on. The post shared by the Twitter user read:
“So I’m going to be narrating a funny story that was shared with me by a friend of mine who went for the wedding of his cousin that was cancelled on Saturday 8 June, 2019 at Okutukutu, Bayelsa by Deeper Life Bible Church @dclmhq they attend. I don’t criticize pastors or churches, but this is overwhelming and annoying So after all the preparation for wedding, the State Overseer of Bayelsa state called the chairman marriage committee of the church to suspend the wedding.
The message sent was “YOUR WEDDING IS SUSPENDED. TWO OF YOU ARE PLACED ON DISCIPLINE.” This was sent on Friday during the traditional marriage. Please who does this? After all the preparation for wedding. So the family of the bride drove to the State Overseer house to beg him to allow the wedding hold. The mother of the bride was rolling on the floor crying & begging the pastor. But the man refused to answer and walked out on them.
Even Jesus Christ never did like that to sinners. So after crying, they went back home and the bride almost ran mad. And this is another reason that can lead to depression & I can provide @MentallyAwareNG contact to one of the family members to help connect the bride to a psychologist The wife and husband said the chairman of the marriage stated that the reason why Bayelsa State Overseer suspended the wedding was because the couple to be ate in same plate a week ago.
Which the State Overseer said it’s wrong & should never happen until after wedding day. I want deeper life @dclmhq Bible Church General Overseer pastor Kumuyi to look into this and call Bayelsa’s State Overseer to explain why he purposely decided to spoil this family’s day of Joy.”
The way African religious leaders criticize and judge their followers or church members (in the case of Christians) over even the most trivial issues is unbelievable. The instructions of the Holy Bible which Christian leaders and many other Christian faithfuls claim to follow and abide by aren’t even as strict as a lot of these religious people make them look. The word of God condemns criticism and being judgmental but we find that in religious settings these days.
In fact many of the rules we find in churches and mosques are actually man-made and are expected to be upheld by members. But the truth is, most of the clergy men who set these rules do even worse in secret. Yet, when members commit less grievous sins or deviate from the set rules or do the wrong thing, all hell will be let loose. Religious leaders are supposed to correct faithfuls when they go wrong and bring them back on the right track not criticize, punish or judge them for their wrongdoings.
In the case of the story above, the church suspending a wedding because the intending couple ate from the same plate just a week to their wedding is very unnecessary and uncalled for, I mean, its not like they committed an immoral act. The church leadership could have just talked to them and corrected them since what they did was against the church rules, but suspending their wedding and disciplining them was just extreme. Well, that’s what we get when we don’t know our rights or when we allow people override us with their so called rules.
