Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has heaped praise on Riyad Mahrez after his free-kick goal gave Algeria a semi-final win over Nigeria at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
With the game at 1-1, the Manchester City star stepped up to place a powerful free-kick beyond Akpeyi, and into the Nigerian goal to give the Algerians a 2-1 win
Rohr also described the game as a wonderful one, adding that the players wanted to take the game to extra time while it was at 1-1.
He said, Daily Post reports: “It was a big fight until the last minute, it was a wonderful match, I think my players wanted it to go to extra time thinking Algeria were more tired.
“We scored an own goal, unlucky, but we have come back every time in this tournament and this time we came back on a penalty. But a wonderful free kick from a football genius made the difference.”
Nigeria will now face Tunisia in the Third Place game after the Carthage Eagles fell to Senegal in the other semi-final on Sunday evening.
