OFFICIAL! Nigerian striker signs for former European champions

Nigerian striker Sammy Ameobi, who is junior brother of former Super Eagles man Shola Ameobi, has signed for two-time European champions Nottingham Forest in the EFL Championship, English football’s second tier after the Premier League.

Ameobi, who featured for Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, in two friendly matches back in 2011, signed a one-year contract with Forest after leaving Bolton Wanderers following the Lancashire club’s relegation to League One.

The 27-year-old becomes Forest’s first signing of the summer transfer window and he expressed his delight after sealing the deal. “I’m very happy. Obviously I know the history of this club, it’s a great club and I’m really happy to be a part of it moving forward,” he said while speaking to the club website.

He went on to reveal the attraction that convinced him to sign for the Reds. “The quality of the players, I played against Forest a few times. The stadium as well, the ground is such a great place to be. It was a huge factor in me moving here,” Ameobi said.

Ameobi, who previously played for Teeside rivals, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough, added: “I’m hoping to excite people. I’m someone who likes to create a lot of things, and hopefully score goals and create assists. Hopefully, I can do that this season. I’ve had my holidays, I’ve come back fighting fit and now I’m raring to go.”

The forward featured just five times for Bolton in the Championship last season, scoring a goal as the club encountered troubled times which led to it failing to play its last two matches of the 2018/19 campaign.

At international level, Ameobi also featured for England’s U-21 side in 2011, though, he followed his brother Shola’s steps and declared for Nigeria in 2014. However, he has never been called up to the Super Eagles squad.

Meanwhile, Ameobi’s arrival comes just as Apostolos Vellios has completed his move from the City Groud and signed for Greek outfit Atromitos, with the 27-year-old forward penning a two-year deal to bring an end to his three-year spell at Forest.
