According to the DailyMail, Manchester United are planning a £50m on two Crystal Palace stars Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Patrick Van Anholt as part of their squad rebuilding. Following a season which saw them finish outside the top four place, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed he will be making major changes to his squad this summer.
The Red Devils are expected to spend heavily this summer, though there’ll be major movements out of the club also. One major area Solskjaer is expected to spend heavily is on his defence and he has identified Palace duo Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Patrick Van Anholt as the first of many players that can help improve a defence that conceded whopping 54 goals in the league this season.
Bissaka was one of the breakthrough stars of this season and has been tipped for a big money move away from the Eagles. Bissaka, 21, is at the top of United’s wishlist while their interest in Van Aanholt is likely to raise a few eyebrows.
According to the Sun, United are keen to sign both players in a deal that is expected to cost in excess of £50m. Solskjaer had recently changed his transfer strategy, turning his attentions primarily to players under the age of 24.
Bissaka fits the mould with United also looking for a long-term successor to Ashley Young, who along with Diogo Dalot, is the club’s only right-back following Antonio Valencia’s departure. The United boss believes the 21-year-old has huge potential and is ready to slot straight into his team next season.
Despite left-back Luke Shaw being named as the club’s Player of the Season, Solskjaer wants to add an experienced Premier League operator to provide genuine competition in that position. It is why United are now reportedly considering making a move for Van Aanholt.
The Dutch international was a regular for the Eagles last season, making 40 appearances and scoring four goals in all competitions. United could, however, face competition for Van Aanholt with the left-back recently being linked to several Serie A clubs.
Despite Palace’s intentions to hold on to both players, United remain confident of striking a deal to land Bissaka and Van Aanholt’s signatures. Meanwhile, in another report, Solskjaer doesn’t believe signing a centre-back is a priority in the summer transfer window for Manchester United, according to reports.
United had a resurgence after sacking Jose Mourinho and appointing Solskjaer, who won 14 of his 19 games while in caretaker charge of the club, but it is now eight defeats in his last 12 matches, highlighting the scale of the rebuilding job ahead in the summer.
The Red Devils failed to keep a clean sheet at Old Trafford all season and conceded 54 Premier League goals, finishing sixth. However, the Metro claims that, despite wanting to sign up to five players this summer, Solskjaer will prioritise four other positions over strengthening the centre of his defence.
Solskjaer will look for a ‘right-back, left-back, central midfielder and right winger’ and ‘will not buy a centre-back for the sake of it’. The report adds that high-calibre players such as Raphael Varane and Kalidou Koulibaly would be of interest but they won’t force it.
Real Madrid’s Varane would have to ‘intimate he’d be keen on a move to Old Trafford’ while Koulibaly could be a tough negotiation as Napoli would want a fee close to £100million.
Solskjaer apparently feels that his first-choice centre-back Victor Lindelof could do with a more ‘robust’ partner in the middle of defence and United are ‘prepared to wait for the right defender’.
