Chelsea suffer a big blow as star player Reuben Loftus-Cheek has been declared injured by club doctors for most of next season after FIFA ban. Loftus-Cheek has suffered a ruptured Achilles and will miss the Europa League final and the start of next season.
The Chelsea midfielder picked up the devastating injury in his club’s friendly – two weeks before the Euro showdown in Baku – against New England Revolution in Boston, America.Loftus-Cheek, 23, now faces at least six months on the sidelines after the injury that could be worse than Callum Hudson-Odoi’s.
Chelsea medics will assess the damage and if their worst fears are confirmed he could be out for up to a year. He will certainly miss the clash against Arsenal in Azerbaijan when Maurizio Sarri’s men look for European glory in a fortnight.
He is also out the UEFA Nations League finals in Portugal when England face Holland in the last four. It is now down to medics to assess whether an operation is needed and when he will be able to come back next season. Loftus-Cheek, who went to the World Cup last year, picked up the injury just after the hour mark. He appeared to catch his foot on the pitch at Gillette Stadium and caught it at an awkward angle.
The star was later spotted leaving the stadium on crutches while wearing a protective boot.Ross Barkley stole the show in Boston, grabbing two goals with Olivier Giroud netting the other to secure a 3-0 win in a game organised as part of the club’s campaign against anti-semitism .
Barkley got Chelsea off to a flyer with a cool finish from inside the area just three minutes in. Then it was Giroud’s turn to get on the scoresheet as he doubled the advantage with a diving header on the half hour mark. Barkley added the third in the 62nd-minute, but the celebrations were short lived as Loftus-Cheek, on as a half-time sub, dropped to the ground just moments after play resumed.
