Lovers of sports betting in Nigeria have been hit with bad news on Tuesday after the Nigerian Senate threatened to shut down the office of popular bet company, Bet9ja, unless the outfit honours their invitation.
Speaking in Abuja during the verification of lotto companies with license to operate in Nigeria, Senate committee chairman on youth and sport, Senator Obinna Ogba, noted that it was unfortunate that Bet9a refused to honour their invitation.
“Clerk, write to Bet9ja again. If they did not honour your our invitation again, we will ask the National Lottery Commission to seal their offices,” Senator Ogba stated on the floor of the upper chambers.
The Senator, representing the Ebonyi Central district for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), insisted that the Senate was making efforts to assist the lottery commission to generate money for the federal government, saying: “We wanted to see bet9ja. They can’t run away.”
According to Senator Ogba, their verification followed series of complaints against the betting companies, adding that some do not even have offices while others have not been making remittances to the government.
He said that during the verification process, about 20 betting companies honoured the Senate’s invitation, adding: “some got the licenses but they are not operating. The new regulation only give them one year to start operations.”
What are your comments on this matter between Bet9ja and the Nigerian Senate? Will the bet company honour the Senate’s invitation or risk being shut down?
