God Save us all!! See how Guns are now smuggled to Nigeria through Togo

The Nigerian Police have discovered a new way arms are getting smuggled into the country and it has to do with our West Africans neighbours.

The police in Ogun State have intercepted a mini truck conveying 34,865 live cartridges from the neighbouring Republic of Togo through a Nigerian border town in Ogun, to Onitsha, in Anambra state. The police also said that it had arrested three suspects including a Togolese, Isa Muhammad, and two Nigerians, Alabi Fayemi and Seyi Bamgbose, in connection with the incident. The state commissioner of police, Ahmed Iliyasu, presented the suspects to journalists at Imeko Police Station, on Saturday. He said the truck and the suspects were arrested on Friday by a stop-and-search border patrol team at Olohunda, a border town between Abeokuta North and Imeko Afon local government areas of the state.

Mr Iliyasu said the cartridges were neatly concealed inside the truck with registration number Lagos KSF 254 XX and was being transported to Onitsha in Anambra State. The police commissioner said the suspect offered some financial inducement to the officers but they rejected it, adding “the extant laws of the land will be invoked on them” (the suspects). “Our operatives on border patrol led by ACP Shettima Muhammad while on routine patrol of the border area on Friday, based on intelligence report, intercepted a Toyota Dyna Mini truck with registration number KSF 254 XX with some cartons neatly concealed therein. “The mode of the concealment aroused the suspicion of our men, who stopped the vehicle and properly searched it.

“Upon the search, 34, 865 live cartridges were discovered in cartons neatly concealed inside the vehicle,” he said. Mr Iliyasu said the police have commenced further investigations into the matter and would soon charge the suspects to court. Mr Muhammad, who is the prime suspect, told journalists that one of his Nigerian customers based in Onitsha gave him the vehicle to help him drive. He said he had to approach another friend, Mr Bamgbose, who had a valid driving licence to drive while he (Mohammed) served as a motor boy.

He said that after getting to Nigeria, they were en route Abeokuta, Ogun capital, for repair work on the vehicle before they were arrested by the police. Mr Mohammed, who denied knowledge of the ammunition inside the truck, said he could have taken the truck to Onitsha thinking it was empty. He, however, could not give the name of the person, who gave him the truck. “I am 36 years old and a bus conductor. “A friend called me that he has one small vehicle but I told him that I don’t have a driver’s license but I have some of my friends that can drive. “We took the vehicle from Togo and when we got to Nigeria, Seyi said the spring was too small for charcoal business and we were taking it to Abeokuta to fix the spring.

“On our way, the police stopped us and said they suspected the vehicle. “I don’t know the owner of the motor but he usually come to Togo to buy vehicles and Okirika (used clothes) and when he gave me the vehicle, he said I should bring it to Onitsha and call him when I get there. “We were not aware that anything was concealed in the vehicle. We thought we were driving an empty vehicle. “I have called the owner immediately we were arrested and he spoke with the police,” he said.

Reports claim that the man who robbed his cousin who was on holiday in Nigeria, has been arrested by police officers attached to the Anambra State police command.

However the suspect who went into hiding, waiting for the cousin to fly back to his base abroad after the incident, was arrested in Ekwulobia where he was with his girlfriend.

The man who robbed his cousin, has long been paraded by the State’s police command alongside the items he stole. The very disturbing event has brought to question the bond that exists in families today. In a bid to survive at all costs or out of sheer envy, family members are no longer seen as close relatives who recognise the fundamentals and meaning behind the very word FAMILY!

End Of Discrimination: Traditional Rulers Meet To End “Osu” in Igbo Land

Traditional rulers across Igboland are in Anambra state to abolish the age-long practice of Osu and other caste system in the region.

Converged in the state are rulers from Agwukwu Nri, Anaocha council of Anambra, Etche and Ikwere of Rivers state.

Also other traditional title holders including prominent leaders in Igbo land will be present to witness the end of the practice which has discriminated the Osu (outcast), ‘Ohu’ (slave) and ‘Ume’ (incestophile)

The Osu caste system is a practice in Igbo society where some people are tagged second-class citizens because they were believed to have been dedicated to some deity.

Also, the Osu person is forbidden from engaging in marital or business relationships with a freeborn including taking traditional title.

Speaking on the preparation, the personal assistant to the Nri regent, Prince Ifeanyi Onyeso, said the pronouncement to abolish the caste systems would be made at a special Nri royal monument for treasure custody known as ‘Ikpo Eze-Nri’.

Onyeso, who is also the spokesperson for the organisers said certain punishments would also be pronounced on the Nri throne against individuals or groups that go contrary to the pronouncement.

“Whoever that calls anybody Osu or practices the Osu caste system will be visited with punishment. Only an Nri man can come and carry out any cleansing of an abomination before the curse that befalls such person can be removed,” Onyeso said.

However, contrary to the agreement of the traditional rulers, the Adama chief priest of Nri, Amobi Nduka, said the preparations did not follow the tradition of the land.

Nduka urged all sons and daughters of Igbo land to “ignore the nugatory proclamation.” He said while he and the Eze Nri had never been in support of the discriminatory practice, revocation of such must follow due process and executed by the relevant authority

Adama said in a statement: “Such a nugatory proclamation should be ignored. He who is imbued with ‘nso’ cannot abrogate nor revoke ‘nso ana’. Abrogatee cannot in pari passu be an abrogator.

PANIC as 17 die from strange illness in Anambra communities

Some communities in Anambta state has been thrown into panic as strange illness has taken over killing atleast seventeen prople as at the time of this report.
Nine of the victims died in Igbedor, while three died in Nzam. Another three died in Umuenwelum, while two died in Ode community. Seventeen persons have been confirmed dead in some communities in Anambra State, following the outbreak of a disease suspected to be diarrhoea.
The affected areas are in the Anambra West Local Government Area of the state. They include Igbedor, Nzam, Umuenwenum Anam and Ode. Nine of the victims died in Igbedor, while three died in Nzam. Another three died in Umuenwelum, while two died in Ode community. A community leader in one of the communities, Cyprian Akpofe, said the community usually experiences cholera around this time of the year. He said he believes the victims died of cholera and not diarrhoea. His words:
“It is pure cholera. All those that died exhibited all the symptoms of cholera before they died. It’s pure cholera. It happens here annually.”

However, the state’s Commissioner for Health, Joe Akabuike, disagreed with the cholera suggestion. Mr. Akabuike, who led some officials of the ministry to the council area, said the deaths recorded in the area were not due to cholera as being speculated, but diarrhoea.

He blamed the disease outbreak on the recent flood disaster that submerged many buildings and farmlands in the area. The commissioner also blamed the residents for seeking solution through traditional means, including going to herbalists rather than accessing health facilities as appropriate.

According to Akabuike, “what we have in Anambra West is not cholera outbreak as being speculated.

“What we have is diarrhoea disease that usually occurs after flooding, characterised by vomiting and other signs but what is important to us is not necessarily the name but the worry that people are dying.

“We are here to tell them that this is a pure environmental challenge. I am here with a team and lots of drugs.”

The Health Commissioner said Governor Willie Obiano had approved money to ensure the situation was arrested to prevent further deaths.  His words: “They should maintain personal hygiene, wash their hands regularly. They died because they seek a solution where it will never come from.

“We will make arrangement to ensure that more drugs are sent to them and immediate construction of a borehole to solve their water needs.”

Unlawful Possession of Firearms! Police Arrests Town Union President In Anambra

Detectives at the Force Criminal Investigations Department, FCID, Alagbon, Lagos have arrested the President General of Eziowelle community and Chairman of the security committee in Idemili North L.G.A, Anambra State over unlawful possession of firearms.

A yet-to-be confirmed number of automatic pump action guns with bags of cartridges were reportedly recovered from the arrested suspects after detectives swooped on their house in the community. One of the suspects was said to have revealed that their illegal arms and ammunition are stocked inside the palace of a ruler in the community.

Several other members of the community are also on the wanted list of the police for other offences bordering on managing unlicensed armed security outfit, imposition of illegal taxes /levies, fraudulent diversion /conversion of community funds etc.

The arrest of the President General of the community, Titus Akpudo and Jude Ogbuagu, Chairman, Security Committee, resulted from a strongly worded petition forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, by concerned stakeholders of the community represented by Messrs Felix Okafor, Emeka Akukwe and Emma Amankwu alleging that the suspects are involved in criminal activities.

In the petition, the stakeholders lamented that their collective woes started three years ago when the President General assumed office alleging that he, in conjunction with his cohorts, introduced all manner of taxes/levies including N1m burial tax before bereaved families could bury their dead.

They also alleged that another N1m building tax to be paid by any indigene who wants to build house in the community was introduced and that they imposed illegal taxes/levies on electricity bills, security fees, magistrate court levies, compulsory donations, residence levies on non-indigenes as well as business permit for shops etc.

The petitioners further alleged that the suspects mobilized armed thugs to attack and unleash mayhem on the indigenes/residents and ostracized them from the community. “Worse still, the payments were not receipted or accounted for but diverted to private pockets.

N200m revenue generated by the community during the tenure of the President General including N20m annual grants from Anambra state government, as well as donations and remittances from Eziowelle improvement union branches have been diverted and squandered without rendering any account since the President General assumed office.

Unfortunately, when the traumatized residents of the community demanded for a change in leadership in a free, fair and credible election, the suspects and their gang of terror imported mercenaries and armed militia men into the community and disrupted the process, rigged and manipulated the election in his favor.”

The stakeholders lamented that several efforts made to get the suspects to account for income generated were rebuffed and instead, he resorted to establish an unlicensed armed security outfit to silence opposition members. The outfit, they said, serves as a task force for collection of illegal taxes/levies and assaults those that fail to pay.

It was gathered that based on this, the Inspector-General of Police directed detectives at the Special Enquiry Bureau, SEB, to swing into action and they succeeded in arresting the President General and the Chairman of the security committee. Other suspects fled from the community.

Police sources said that after the arrest of the suspects, persistent calls for their immediate release unconditionally, came from top police officers in Anambra state and Abuja but for the insistence of the detectives that the suspects must be taken to Lagos with the dangerous weapons recovered from them for further and thorough investigation to be carried out.

However, sources said the suspects were granted bail barely 24 hours after their arrest based on threats from a top police officer in Anambra state who was earlier conferred with a chieftaincy title by members of the gang led by the suspects.

Now, tension has enveloped the community following the questionable release of the suspects without thorough investigation during this festive period when many disenchanted indigenes of the community, home and abroad, are expected home.

When contacted for comments, the Police Public Relations officer, FCID, Alagbon, Lagos, ASP Niyi Ogundeyi told our reporter: “I will contact the team leader of the unit investigating the case to speak with you. On my part, I will contact the Force Public Relations Officer in Abuja before speaking with you
