On Thursday, May 14, 2020, Nigeria recorded 193 new cases of COVID-19, taking the total number of infections over 5,000.
According to the latest figures from the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the total number of infected people now stands at 5, 162, while 1,180 have been discharged.
Atiku Tells FG To Sell Presidential Jets
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has told Nigerian political leaders to do away with their luxurious lifestyle and deal with the harsh economic reality caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Sell eight or nine of the jets in the presidential air fleet”advised the ex-VP and also said that the N27 billion budget for the renovation of the National Assembly be scrapped.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has described almajiris as the breeding ground for COVID-19 due to their lack of hygiene, lack of shelter and lack of proper sanitation.
“Because they stay in a congested environment, they have no defined place for them to sleep, no prescribed food for them to eat, no provision for sanitation and therefore they are vulnerable” said the Ganduje on Thursday, May 14, 2020.
Buhari To Present Amended 2020 Budget To National Assembly Next Week
President Muhammadu Buhari will present the amended version of the 2020 budget to members of the National Assembly next week.
The 2020 budget has been reduced the N10.59 trillion 2020 Appropriation Bill by N71.5 billion due to the crippling effect of the (COVID-19 pandemic on the country’s economy.
Coronavirus Could Infect More Than 200 Million In Africa – WHO
According to a modelling study by the World Heath Organization (WHO), nearly a quarter of a billion Africans will be infected with COVID-19 and it could kill 150,000 people a year.
“Our model points to the scale of the problem for health systems if containment measures fail”said the authors of the report.

Six Drown While Returning From Funeral
It was a case of double sadness when six persons drowned when a boat capsized in Ogurude, Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.
According to Punch Metro, the deceased were returning from a burial from the other side of town when the tragedy occurred.
Monarch Defiles 14-Year-Old Girl
A 62-year-old royal father from Osun state, David Ogungbemi has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.
He was arrested with his 21-year-old son and another unidentified person who allegedly also took part in the sexual assault of the minor.
BRT Crushes Lagos Businesswoman To Death
According to PUNCH Metro, a BRT driver by the name of Collins Nnodi has gone into hiding after he crushed a woman by the name of Mrs Grace Okeleke to death.
The incident which happened earlier in the week saw the woman die on the spot when knocked over by the bus as she attempted to cross the road.
Police Arrest Man For Defiling Two Sisters
The Imo State Police has arrested a 23-year-old man by the name of Uchenna Mbahotu for allegedly defiling two sisters.
According to the report, Mbahotu allegedly defiled the 11 and nine-year-old siblings whose lived in the same compound with him.
24 Girls Rescued From Traffickers Den
On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, the Lagos State Police Command rescued 24 females ranging from 13 to 27. The police officers also arrested four human traffickers in the process.
According to the police report, the four men trafficked the victims from Akwa Ibom and kept them in slums while using them for prostitution.
