David Adeleke has been in the news ever since he hit the entertainment scene. From scandals to his relationship and of course his good music which has been characterised with many collaborations. While Nigerian music remains a powerful force in the global music sphere, some notable artists have been responsible for putting Nigeria out there on the entertainment map.
Below are some of the top guns in Nigerian music whose vocals have earned them a spot beside other globally recognized international artists. These folks brought a new meaning to the word ‘Afro Music’
5. TIWA SAVAGE
Mother of baby Jamil fondly called Jam Jam by the singer, herself came into the Nigerian music industry with a bang. After thrilling fans with her debut single, ‘Kele Kele Love’, the singer took things up a notch by signing with legendary music producer, Don Jazzy. After that, Tiwa fame blew up and earned her a teaser as rumours spread about her collaboration with Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin who was seen in a video she shared rocking out to her Wizkid-assisted jam, “Ma Lo”.
Tiwa has also teamed up with Chris and Wizkid. She once shared the news of another collaboration with Jamaican singer, Kranium in September 2018. Tiwa also got major attention in 2018 when she thrilled fans in a beautiful song that featured a lovely blend in vocals between her and America’s Omarion in the remix of ‘get it now’.
Innocent Idibia aka Tuface/ Tubaba is known as the King of Afro Pop. He is a music legend as his international collaboration came at a time when there was no Twitter for communication, e-mails barely work down here and things weren’t particularly easy. Beenie Man was at the peak of his career when Nfana Ibaga (remix) was released.
The song came on the international pack of 2face Idibia’s classic album, Face2Face. Unlike many international collabs these days, the video for this song was shot in motherland, Ghana to be precise and it features then, best rapper in Ghana Reggie Rockstone.
Known for hit tracks like, ‘fall in love’, ‘endowed’, ‘tongolo’ Dbanj has proved over time that he is on top of his game and isn’t slowing down. With many awards and other achievements to his name, Dbanj has also got the attention of foreign artists that have led to successful collaborations. One of them is the legendary Snoop Dogg.
His song, Mr Endowed was recorded after D’Banj’s failed recording deal with GOOD Music. The remix of the song arrived 5 months later, October 2010 & was an instant hit with the Sesan directed video coming shortly after. D’banj and Snoop Dogg performed the single at the 2013 MTV Africa All Stars Concert held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa.
The remix for the song is widely believed to be Nigeria’s most successful international collaboration to date. The song won “Most Gifted Male Video” award at the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards.
Davido has become a household name since he released his single, ‘Damiduro’. Considering the fact that Davido is one of the biggest afropop stars working today, it’s no surprise that he is currently leading the charge in this regard.
Davido seems like an absolute delight to collaborate with, as his sound is malleable enough to transcend genre. Not one to be put in a box, he’s already made songs with hardcore rappers like Meek Mill, dancehall artists like Popcaan and r&b singers like Tinashe.
