President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the school authority and families of the students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University who died following a bride collapse on Monday night.
Buhari prayed for rest for the souls of the dead, trusting that the bereaved families and university community would be consoled by Almighty God
In a statement by Garba Shehu, the president who also condoled with management, staff and students of the university, describing the development as “tragic, sad and unfortunate”
He expressed regret that, “these future leaders and potential family benefactors met such an untimely end.” Buhari prayed for rest for the souls of the dead, and that the bereaved families and university community would be consoled by Almighty God. The president also prayed for God to grant speedy healing to the injured students.
Reports from the state have it that the incident occurred while the students were trying to return to their hostel after reading overnight for their exams amid the rain on Monday night and the connecting bridge between their reading area and their hostel collapsed.

Nigerians have queried why such a bridge should still be used at such a time when the world has moved on in terms of technology and sophistication.
A member of staff of the institution was later quoted as saying that the pedestrian bridge was constructed in 2010 to carry between 10 to 15 students at a time.
Meanwhile, reports have it that angry students of the university Tuesday night staged a protest against the school’s management over their inability to repair the bridge until it led to the death of their colleagues.
The school authorities have shut down academic activities in an attempt to forestall escalated tension among the students.
