Man plans to plead guilty to deaths of 36 partygoers in fire

OAKLAND, Calif. - The master tenant of a cluttered, dilapidated San Francisco Bay Area warehouse where 36 people perished in a late-night fire in 2016 is scheduled to plead guilty Friday to the deaths, avoiding a second trial after the first ended in a hung jury. Families of several victims told the East Bay Times last week that prosecutors told them Derick Almena, 50, will plead guilty to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter in exchange for a nine-year sentence. Almena may serve little or none of that term

TGIF: With 50 years behind us, maybe we can still keep meeting this way

This is not the column I had planned to submit today. The other one was written last summer. Writing a column has been a part of my professional life for most of my years in journalism, and readers of four different newspapers have been kind to indulge me. Last summer, I thought Jan. 22 would be an appropriate time to call it quits. I wrote a column saying goodbye. However, I’ve changed my mind. Some may consider this good news; others, not so much. You can’t please everybody. I’ve always hoped I could

Players facing frenzy madness doing quarantine life

"These people have no idea about tennis, about practice courts...It's a complete disaster...I cannot imagine staying two weeks like this..." Roberto Bautista Agut, the ATP's 13th ranked player, disgustingly said. He was one of too many players going through quarantine after having the bad luck of being on a flight with a COVID-19 infected person. Everyone had to think of a creative method to practice in their room since going outdoors to practice like their Adelaide or other Melburne comrades was forbidden.

Poetry for December from Society of Great River Poets

January Poem Half of the twelve days of Christmas are in January. By the time we've “seen” on Epiphany, many Iowans are perusing seed catalogs dreaming of summer blooms in the garden, sprouting corn and beans, potatoes. Poets think of poems - rhymes and meters whether sonnet, haiku or free verse — original lines of their own to feed, grow, cultivate and encourage until they bear fruit as a bountiful crop to be shared. Just as gardeners share their crops poets share theirs to enrich lives hoping their winter

Analysis: Wall Street hedges against possible bumps in U.S. vaccine rollout By Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - As U.S. stock prices have marched to record highs, futures contracts for Wall Street's "fear gauge" show some investors are buying insurance against market turbulence that could erupt if surprise glitches hit the U.S. rollout of COVID-19 vaccines. This hedging can be seen in futures on the Cboe Volatility Index expiring in March and beyond, which are trading well above the index's current levels. Uncertainty over the rollout has also helped keep the "fear gauge" hovering above its long-term
