Advocacy group welcomes changes coming to the Pittsburgh Zoo

The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has indicated it will reapply for membership in the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, a move that can’t happen soon enough for a local animal advocacy organization. Dr. Brian Bonsteel, president and founder of Humane Action Pittsburgh, said the zoo’s anticipated move to rejoin the AZA coupled with last week’s announcement that Dr. Barbara Baker, the zoo’s president and chief executive officer for the past 31 years, is retiring, opens the door to better, more humane animal care at the 77-acre facility in Highland Park.
