Barry Beamish II removed the italic lettering on the side of his family's longtime Urbandale neighborhood business on Tuesday, though a faint imprint of the name "Spanky's" remained. Spanky's Tavern served its final customers on June 19 after 25 years at 1414 W. Michigan Ave.

A 19-year-old Battle Creek man was arrested after deputies said he got in a woman’s car and exposed himself in a Meijer parking lot. A woman said she was sitting in her car at the Meijer on Michigan Route 89 in Gun Plain Township on June 3, 2021, when a man asked her for directions.

Dog rescued from Battle Creek apartment fire

A dog was rescued Tuesday from a fire in a Battle Creek apartment. Battle Creek firefighters were called at 12:32 p.m. to the Williamsburg Apartments at 795 Wagner Drive and found a fire in a bedroom of a second floor apartment. No one was home at the time, but firefighters said the dog was taken from the apartment and was unharmed.

A 32-year-old Battle Creek woman was identified as the person who died in the Calhoun County Jail. Michigan State Police said corrections officers and medical staff found Heather Burrett unresponsive in her cell June 16, 2021. Burrett was pronounced dead after attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Couple injured when tree falls on golf cart at Riverside Golf Club

Two people were injured, one seriously, when a tree fell on their golf cart Friday at a Battle Creek golf course. Battle Creek police and firefighters were called at 1:35 p.m. to Riverside Golf Club and Banquet Center at 245 E. Columbia Ave. The couple, a 75-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman from Coldwater, were playing the 12th hole on the south side of Columbia Avenue when a large cherry tree fell on their golf cart.
