Defending champion, Emmanuel off to flying start at 2019 CBN Open

Defending champion, Sylvester Emmanuel got his CBN Senior Open title defense off to a brilliant start, while second seed, Joseph Imeh dug deep to advance to the second round in Abuja on Monday.

Emmanuel began his quest for back-to-back CBN Open titles with a convincing 6-0 6-3 victory over Isiaka Toriola, while 2017 finalist Joseph Imeh rallied from a set down to beat Emmanuel Ikakah 3-6 6-2 6-3 and progress to the second round.

Meanwhile, Aanu Aiyegbusi and Ronke Akingbade secured commanding victories in the women’s singles on Monday, with 2010 runner-up, Aiyegbusi speeding past Joy Sunday 6-0 6-0, while 2013 champion, Akingbade surrendered only 3 games in her 6-1 6-2 dispatch of Temitope Fashanu.

The 2019 CBN Senior Open will have a new women’s singles champion following the withdrawal of last year’s winner, Sarah Adegoke.
