In recent club football competitions, the premier league clubs have been left rueing missed opportunities to progress into the knock out stages or to make major impressions. Spanish teams especially, seem to have dominated the European club competitions, which have led many critics to say the premier league is way behind in league standings across Europe and the world generally.
The last time a premier league team won the champions league was back in 2012 when Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in the final in that epic battle, where Drogba sealed his place as a Chelsea legend. The last time two English teams got to the final, was back in 2008 when Manchester United played against Chelsea on a cold night in Russia, United came out victorious on that occasion.
Critics love to state that the premier league is overrated, but on the contrary, it doesn’t even get the accolades it deserves. The premier league is arguably the most competitive leave in the world, where other leagues have two main clubs battling for supremacy and champions league qualifications, the premier league has what is now called the big six clubs, a break from the traditional big four.
With more money being invested in the premier league and clubs getting more money as well, competition is even becoming stiffer. It’s only in the premier league where a club like Leicester can shock the world and go all the way to winning the league in a rare special season. So many clubs are dark horses and if given the chance will always rise to the occasion.
Tottenham have been doing exceptionally well in the last few seasons, Pochettino has his team playing really good football and they’re impressing everyone, this season although they have dropped from the title race which was a three-man race at some point, Tottenham are in the semifinals of the champions league and from here anything can happen. Pochettino believes his Spurs side have nothing to prove to anyone and that they can go to infinity and beyond, alongside Ajax football club they are the outsiders to win the competition.
Liverpool is on fire lately, playing with confidence never seen before in their team. Fanatics believe the Liverpool defence boosted by Virgil Van Dijk who’s the player of the season, have encouraged the team to play a more attacking minded football. Once a club can rely on its defence, the rest of the team can focus on creating chances and getting goals. In Liverpool’s case, even the defence has been supporting with goals and assists of their own, they’ve had an excellent season.
Arsenal is not having the best of times this season, but they have managed to put themselves in contention to win the UEFA Europa League. Their manager Unai Emery has won the competition before and has the experience needed to guide the club to the trophy, but first, they have to get past a stubborn Valencia side who can beat anybody on their day. Critics have always complained about arsenal lacking strong leaders and players with the right mentality, but if they can somehow manage to go all the way and lift the trophy, then they can look back at the season and be proud.
Finally, Chelsea has not been brilliant this season. They’ve had a lot of poor results but somehow find themselves close to the end in the UEFA Europe league. Sarri will be doing everything he can to win this trophy to prove to Russian billionaire and owner of the club Roman Abramovich that he has what it takes to take the club forward. Winning the Europa league will also mean Chelsea qualifies for the champions league and they’ll be able to attract big players this season while hoping they can keep hold of Eden Hazard.
These four teams have made the premier league proud in Europe this season. Critics will be forced to rethink the negative agenda they have about the English premier league. Is it the best league in the world, will they be able to dominate Europe consistently just like the Spanish teams have been able to do recently, too soon to say, but it’ll be interesting to watch as it all unfolds.
