England football legend, Gary Lineker, has bashed Brazil’s football legend, Pele, over his ‘one skill’ comment about Barcelona and Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi. Lineker, who starred for Messi’s Barcelona between 1986 and 1989, took to Twitter to post his response to Pele’s comment on Messi whom he said only has one skill so cannot be regarded as being better than him (Pele).
Lineker saw the comment and right away described it as ‘utter nonsense’, saying “If this is how you judge players then the same would apply to Maradona. Utter nonsense.” Pele had been quoted by Folha De Sao Paulo, said, “How can you make a comparison between a guy who heads the ball well, shoots with the left, shoots with the right and another who only shoots with one leg, only has one skill and doesn’t head the ball well?”

Whether he’s one-skilled or not, Messi has won nine La Liga titles, four Champions League titles, six Copa Del Rey wins and three FIFA Club World Cup titles in an illustrious career with Barcelona. Messi also holds the records for most official goals scored in La Liga (392), a La Liga season (50), a club football season in Europe (73), a calendar year (91), El Clásico (26), as well as those for most assists in La Liga (156) and the Copa América (11). He has scored over 650 senior career goals for club and country.
Pele on his part won three FIFA World Cups in 1958, 1962 and 1970, being the only player ever to do so. The 78-year-old is also the all-time leading goalscorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games and at club level, he remains the record goalscorer for Santos having scored a mind-numbing 619 goals in 638 appearances for the Brazilian side.
