It was a chaotic scene in the Idu Uruan axis of Uruan Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State after Ekpo Masquerades were said to have attacked the City of Living Grace Chapel and destroyed the properties of the church as some of the members were beaten while the phones of others were stolen.
According to reports, the masquerades were not happy that Apostle Emmanuel Etim, the pastor of the church had time and again, preached against the practice of them terrorising the citizens during the Ekpo masquerade festival. A group of touts led the masquerades as they descended on the church.
Ms Mboutidem Sam, one of the church members who spoke with Daily Trust said that the church was observing month-long fasting and prayer when the incident occurred.
According to her, the attack was possibly due to the fact that the Pastor had preached against the fear of the masquerades repeatedly. He added that the masquerades must have decided to attack the church physically as their death threats against members of the church had failed.
She further revealed that the masquerades had carried out two attacks on the church on the same day. According to her, at first, some touts had entered the premises of the church and destroyed the speaker outside and put the generator off. They returned later with some masquerades, entered the church and began to beat the members while further destroying properties. In the process, some lost their phones while some others were seriously injured.
A motorcyclist who brought a member of the congregation to church was attacked and he had blood dripping from his head.
Sam, however, revealed that nobody died and that one of the injured persons who was rushed to the hospital has been discharged.
She, however, said she did not know if the case has been reported to the police.
“They stole phones from the pastor and some choristers. So many people lost their property. The car of one of our pastors was vandalised, that was the only car that was destroyed. People were still coming to the Church when the incident happened. The attack would have been very severe than that if the Church was filled,” she stated.
