The war of attrition between the governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki and the national chairman of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress shows no sign of abating as the helmsman of Edo has stated through his spokesperson Crusoe Osagie that he will probe contracts for construction of structures and supply of equipment to Benin Central Hospital executed under the administration of Oshiomole.
It remains to be seen who blinks first between the godfather and his anointed godson in the emerging friction that has set both parties on a war torn path. Oshiomole fought the battle of his life when he confronted the foot soldiers of Chief Tony Anenih, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion in his bid to secure the mandate for his second term for Osadebey House. The former labour leader single handedly chose his successor in the person of Obaseki, the state’s Economic Advisory Council chairman despite the expression of interest by political actors such as his deputy Dr. Pius Odubu, Chief Kenneth Imasuagbon, General Charles Airhiavbere, Osarodion Ogie, former minister of works, Engr. Chris Ogienwonyi.
As the race for the 2020 Edo gubernatorial election gathers pace, intrigues are building as the said date gets close with the tussle shifted to the 24 members-elect in the state house of assembly, where the 9 loyal members were allegedly sworn in and elected the new speaker – Frank Okiye under the cover of the night. The 15 other members elect have stood their ground where their spokesperson Hon. Washington Usifo countered that they were deliberately schemed out because the governor wanted to impose a speaker on them.
In addition to this development, last week, the governor also fired eight commissioners who are perceived to be loyalists of the national chairman of the APC from the state cabinet as the friction between both parties shows no sign of decline.
In an effort to quell to raging crisis between the heavyweights, the Oba of Benin, who led members of the Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs to pay a courtesy visit on President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, last week to quickly intervene in the feud between Obaseki and Oshiomole.
Loyalists of both political trojans are up against each others neck in a bid to secure the big pie as party faithfuls and the people will decide on who will emerge as the number one citizen of Edo State next year at the polls.
