Race for leadership in the incoming ninth National Assembly now becomes a battle for who wants want and how to get what he wants.
Undisputed is the fact that the All Progressives Congress has majority in the House of Representatives and Nigerian Senate and will be producing candidates for the posts.
The party leadership has taken the initiative to give endorsement to its preferred candidate for these post when Senator Ahmad Lawan (Yobe) was picked to contest for the post of Senate President in the ninth Senate.
But, Ahmad’s endorsement looks like water down the drawn for others Senators within the party that has same ambition considering that Senator Ali Ndume (Borno) has already declared intention to run for same office.
Ndume’s candidacy has been gaining momentum as he has began to court other APC lawmakers to come to his side while giving Sen. Lawan the cold shoulders, even when many party stakeholders have been sent to persuade him to drop the ambition.
The Borno Senator has refused to step down and continue on wooing lawmakers before the Assembly will be inaugurated in June and he will stand for election.
But, it looks like party leadership have also intensified the pressure to prevail over Ndume as the Yobe State Chapter of the APC has just chastised Ndume, calling on him to respect the supremacy of the party and avoid placing personal interest above collective interest.
“The interest of the party supersedes all other interests,” Bakabe said.
“Ndume should avoid the pitfalls of the Bukola Saraki’s Senate presidency, this must not be repeated in the interest of the party, Nigeria and democracy,” he said.
Bakabe commended returning and newly elected senators for identifying with the position of the party and presidency on the proposed leadership of the National Assembly.
“The endorsement of Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, for Senate President will provide the required leadership and coordination for the APC led administration to effectively execute its policies and programmes for the benefit of Nigerians.
“Lawan will run an inclusive leadership that will give every Nigerian a true sense of belonging and fulfillment, he has the required experience, knowledge and administrative skills for the senate to reclaim its glory as a progressive arm of government,” he said.
