As part of his send forth and to appreciate his contributions to sports development, some former Nigeria internationals have concluded arrangement to celebrate the outgoing Lagos State Governor, His Excellency, Akinwunmi Ambode, in Lagos.
Speaking at a press briefing, a former Nigerian international, Waheed Akanni, who is the chairman of the organising committee announced May 18, 2019 as the big day for the match. He said the charity match between Africa XI and Naija Legends is to celebrate Gov. Ambode’s excellence in sports development.
According to him, Liberia president, George Weah and former Chelsea star, Roger Milla, Didier Drogba as well as George Essien, Kolo Toure and Stephen Appiah are some of the African legends to face their Nigerian counterparts which include Nwankwo Kanu, Samson Siasia and Austin Jay Jay Okocha alongside Ifeanyi Udeze, Henry Nwosu and others at the renovated Onikan Stadium.
“Gov. Ambode has served Lagos meritoriously for four years, so the match will be played at the newly remodeled Onikan Stadium on May 18, which is 11days to his final handover on May 29.”
“Aside from George Weah and Drogba, other African legends have signed up for the game between African Legends and Ex- Super Eagles’ stars.”
“Others who will play on the side of the African legends are Michael Essien and Samuel Eto’O ”
“The stage has been set for a curtain raiser between Lagos United Under-15 boys and girls against their Kebbi State counterparts. This is to spice up the game aimed to celebrating the sports achievements of Ambode in Lagos State.”
“The U-15 games are aimed at raising awareness for grassroots football development, which has gained prominence across the country.
“The proceeds from these games will be donated to the children of some ex-internationals who have been finding it difficult to pay school fees.”
Another former international, Samson Siasia explained that 21 African legends are expected to storm Nigeria for the match in honour of governor Ambode.
Former Wimbledon forward, John Fashanu added that the ex-Nigerian internationals would partner with Sia One Football Academy and other academies in the country to hunt for talents as reservoir for the various national teams.
Some of the other former stars of the Beautiful Game in the continent who have been approached to join include; Senegal’s El -Hajj Diouf, Ghanaian duo of Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah. Former French star, Christian Karembu is also on the card to storm Lagos.
