Chief Edwin Clark, a respected Ijaw statesman and leader has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to do anything tangible for the oil rich Niger Delta region.
Clark, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, said the South-south geopolitical zone has been marginalized for too long.He said, “President Muhammadu Buhari has done nothing for the Niger Delta. Rather, they are taking everything from us. No appointments, no developments.“We in the Niger Delta produce the resources that feed this country, but we are not participants. We are neglected, dehumanised, marginalised.Instead of moving forward, we are moving backward.”He insisted that restructuring is the only solution to Nigeria’s survival and development, hence the endorsement of a candidate that believes in the ideologyChief Clark said the about 17 presidential candidates were spoken to before the decision was taken, he said they were all questioned about their position on the issue of restructuring and Atiku Abubakar’s take on the matter sufficed. He disclosed that even President Muhammadu Buhari had been questioned on the same issue but says he (Buhari) does not believe in the idea of restructuring.“Buhari said he does not believe in restructuring,” Clark said.In a related development PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari and his foremost challenger, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have split Niger Delta militants, causing them to speak in discordant tunes over who the people of the region should support in next month’s presidential election.Recently, a self-styled coalition, known as the 21st Century Youths for Restructuring, threatened to attack oil facilities in the creeks if the Federal Government did not stop the move to dock the Chief Justice of Nigerian, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, over alleged failure to declare his assets.
However, another assembly of Niger-Delta militants, led by the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers, RNDA, and nine other militant groups, yesterday, said the former was working for Atiku Abubakar and warned governors of the South-South to stop playing politics with Onnoghen’s case. The 21st Century Youths in a statement by its leader, self-styled “Gen” Izon Ebi, declared: “Niger Delta people want restructuring and anything short of allowing our people to freely exercise their rights and choose leaders that will restructure Nigeria to meet modern and current reality will give us no choice but to stop the activities of oil exploration and exploitation in our land and ocean.
