Lionel Messi’s first game after his sixth FIFA Player of the Year award was a 2-1 victory over Samuel Chukwueze’s Villarreal but it wasn’t without worry for Barcelona fans as the Argentine went off injured.
The 32-year-old was greeted by a loud cheer by the Barcelona supporters before the game and he nearly opening scoring but his shot hit the side netting. However, the home side took the lead via French international, Antoine Griezmann.
Barcelona extended their lead with a powerful goal from Brazilian Arthur, who rifled a right foot shot from 30 yards past Sergio Asenjo in goal for the visitors. But with the game heading into half-time, Santi Cazorla scored a brilliant long range strike to make it 2-1.
Messi did not show up for the second half as he was replaced by Ousmane Dembele for his first match of the season following a long-time injury.
Super Eagles sensation, Samuel Chukwueze tried to inspire a comeback for Villarreal but no goals were scored in the second half as the Catalans held on for the important win.
