Algeria will face Super Eagles in the semifinal at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after beating Ivory Coast on penalties in the quarter finals. The game went into extra time and penalties after a 1-1 draw with goals from Sofiane Feghouli and Jonathan Kodjia after 120 minutes of play.
Ivory Coast started the game on a bright note as they put so much pressure on Belmadi’s men but failed to find the back of the net.
Algeria got the first goal of the game after just 21 minutes of play. The ball was sprayed out to the left wing, which Mamadou Bagayoko should have dealt with. He was bundled over by Baghdad Bounedjah who won the ball off him and finds Ramy Bensebaini, whose cross reaches Feghouli in the centre. The former West Ham midfielder makes no mistake as he slams his shot home.

A terrible Ivory Coast pass lets Algeria in as the Desert Foxes almost made it 2-0 in the first half. Riyad Mahrez goes on a good run, gets into the box but his effort towards goals was blocked. Baghdad Bounedjah’s follow-up was also blocked too.
Algeria finished the first as the best team with the Elephants lucky not to have been two goals down after 45 minutes of play. Ivory coast have also been creating problems for the Algerian defence but they have failed to make it count.
Algeria begin the second half just like they ended the first 45 minutes winning a penalty soa early. Algeria striker Baghdad Bounedjah was played through on goal seconds after the restart and tries to go round keeper Sylvain Gbohouo, who takes him out of the equation. Bounedjah steps up to take the resulting penalty but his kick is down the centre inches too high and it cannons off the crossbar.

Ivory Coast level things up in the 62nd minute. Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha surges forward from the halfway line and finds Jonathan Kodjia out on the left. He dribbles past Djamel Benlamri, cuts inside and then blasts a shot past keeper Rais M’Bolhi.

Algeria almost got their lead back in the five minutes later after Baghdad Bounedjah runs onto a through ball, but Ivory Coast keeper Sylvain Gbohouo does brilliantly to come off his line and force Bounedjah into a shot, which he saves.
Riyad Mahrez almost hit the back of the nets in the 69th minute after hitting a perfect shot past the goalkeeper but Mamadou Bagayoko slides in from nowhere to clear it off the line. Zaha has totally messed up a big chance to put the Ivory Coast ahead in the 75th minute. Max Gradel clips a pass over the top with Zaha completely unmarked but his volley hits the outside of his foot and flies away from goal.

The match ended 1-1 after full time whistle was blown by the Ethopian referee, heading into extra-time.
Both teams didn’t create a clear cut chance in the first 15 minutes of extra time but The Elephants started the second 15 minutes on a good note after a good wing play from Maxwell Cornet, who dribbled past Djamel Benlamri down the right but his resulting cross was met by an Algerian defender who almost puts it into his own net.
Islam Slimani almost puts Algeria into the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final five minutes left. It was a great ball into the box and the Leicester striker gets a decent head onto it, which Gbohouo parries away.
Algeria win the penalty shootout 3-4 and will face Nigeria in the semi-finals on Sunday.
