AFCON 2019: Ghana Star becomes first player to get Red card in Egypt

Ghana defender John Boye made history on Tuesday night when he picked up a red card in his first appearance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. The Black Stars defender became the first player to be sent off during thr tournament which began on Fridaym 21st of June.

The Metz defender picked up a second yellow card early in the second half after earning a warning in the first half. Boye had been impressive for the Black Stars although he could not prevent the Squirrels of Benin from finding the back of the net in the first half. His impressive performance at the back had allowed the Black Stars play from the back and get two goals courtesy of Andre and Jordan Ayew.

The coach of the Black Stars, James Appiah made a tactical change immediately to protect their lead as they faced the larger part of the second half with ten men. Boye made his national team debut in 2008 against Gabon and was included in the Ghana national team’s 23-man squad for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in January 2012.

He made his tournament debut in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations match against Botswana in January 2012. He was part of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations team that took a silver medal after they lost to Ivory Coast in an 8-9 penalty shoot out.
