Bad news for Chelsea as key player is set to miss Europa League final

Chelsea have been dealt a heavy blow with Ruben Loftus-Cheek set to miss this season’s UEFA Europa League final.

The 23-year-old limped out of the Blues’s friendly clash with New England Revolution.

The Blues won the game by three goals to nothing, with Ross Barkley getting two goals. French striker Olivier Giroud got the other goal.

Despite the win, Maurizio Sarri will have to worry over the fitness of Loftus-Cheek, who has scored four goals and provided three assists in the Europa League this season. He scored 6 goals and provided 2 assists in the just concluded English Premier League.

Loftus-Cheek was seen leaving the stadium in crutches, but it is not yet clear how long he will spend on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old is one of the Blues’s brightest youngsters and has shown a lot of promise over the last two years.

He will be greatly missed by Sarri who is looking to win his first trophy as Chelsea boss. The Blues finished the season in third and are looking to end their campaign on a high.

They face an Arsenal side that are looking to use the Europa League as a means of getting to the Champions League. Unai Emery’s side finished the Premier League in fifth position, but can qualify for the Champions League with a win over Chelsea.

Former Chelsea boss Roberto di Matteo has said that after a difficult season, the Blues’ campaign can be described as a successful one if they are able to win the Europa League.

He said, the Sun reports: “Chelsea had a really good start to the season when they went unbeaten, playing some really good football but then encountered some problems in the winter months.

“I thought they came very good at the end. They’re third in the league and played some good football but not consistent enough. If they can win the Europa League that must be a successful season, in my head at least.

“And Sarri’s first trophy, it will be important for him. I think for the players, for the club, you would describe it as a successful season.”

When it comes to winning European trophies, Di Matteo is no stranger as he led the Blues to UEFA Champions League glory in 2012. He is the only man to have won the competition for the London side.
