Arsenal fans were greeted with great news on Tuesday afternoon after the English giants confirmed the signing of Netherlands international, Jill Roord, from Frauen Bundesliga side, Bayern Munich.
The signing comes in a period in which the Gunners were crowned champions of England at the end of April after claiming a first Women’s Super League title in seven years, beating Manchester City and Chelsea to the title.
And Roord, who is Arsenal’s first signing of the summer, expressed her pride at joining the club where she will link up with a couple of compatriots at the Emirates Stadium, such as club top scorer Vivianne Miedema and Danielle van de Donk who were among the Gunners’ key players in their league title-winning campaign.
“I’m really proud that I’m going to be an Arsenal player,” the 22-year-old told the club website after completing her move from Bayern. “Arsenal is an amazing club and they’re also champions now, so I’m really happy and proud to join the club.”
The Dutch midfielder added: “Arsenal is one of the clubs in England that I really like. In women’s football, they’ve always been one of the top clubs. Of course there are some Dutch friends of mine who play there, so I’ve always followed them. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Roord went on to describe herself and her style of play: “What type of player am I? I’m really technical. I can play offensive and also defensive midfield. I’m really technical and like to have the ball at my feet. I can also score a lot, so hopefully I can make some goals too.”
She also talked about her aspirations at Arsenal: “I want to develop myself as a player and I think it’s a good step for me, the next step. I want to play for Arsenal, I want to be important and I want to win trophies with the team.”
Roord, who was part of the Bayern Munich team that made it to this season’s Champions League semi-final before falling to Asisat Oshoala’s Barcelona, added: “We’re going to play in the Champions League now and I’ve played in it before so I know what it’s like.”
