Liverpool missed out on 2.3 billion naira following victory over Barcelona

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool dramatic champions league comeback over Barcelona cost the club a whopping £5m. The Reds did the impossible as they overturned a 3-0 first leg deficit by beating the La Liga champions 4-0 on a special night at Anfield to progress to their second consecutive final 4-3 on aggregate.

Goals from Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldium propelled the Reds to victory as they complete one of the greatest comebacks in champions league history. However, the win came at a cost for Klopp’s team as they missed out on a 5 million pounds windfall that Barcelona would’ve paid.

The Blaugrana had former Red stars Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho in their ranks. Coutinho joined Barcelona from Liverpool in January last year which included a clause.  According to the Mirror, a clause in Coutinho’s arrangement in January 2018 stated that the Reds would be owed the fee should the Spanish giants win the Champions League this season. The Premier League club will now never see the €5.23m that was set aside.

Not that Liverpool will be too disappointed. By reaching the final the Reds have guaranteed themselves a payout of at least £13m, which could rise to £16.5m should they beat Tottenham in Madrid.

The Brazilian has failed to live up to expectations since sealing his move to the Nou Camp last summer. He has scored just five goals and set up just a further two in his 33 La Liga appearances this season.

Following the catastrophic loss Tuesday, Spanish media reported Coutinho days at the club is over and the La Liga champions are ready to cut their losses this summer.  Tuesday night’s performance from Coutinho was unacceptable for a club competing in the Champions League semi-final with the Brazilian player touching the ball just 18 times and being virtually anonymous in the 60′ minutes he was on the Anfield pitch.

He was whistled upon being substituted for Semedo on the hour mark and if there was any doubt surrounding his future at the club, his abject display on Tuesday will surely have been the final nail in the coffin. Barça now face an arduos task of finding a buyer for the player who cost the Catalan club 120 million euro (plus 40 in variables).

There were other players in the Barça shirt on the Anfield pitch who have also been singled out for the dismal display with the normally reliable Sergio Busquets delivering a disappointing shift in midfield.

The blistering pace of the game seemed to overwhelm 30-year-old who is normally ably assisted by Rakitic and Vidal to cover the ground that the Sabadell born player can no longer reach and the Liverpool midfield surged by the hapless Busquets on at least six occasions.

The Spanish international has been one of the Catalan sides most consistently solid performers over the past decade but as time moves on, the inability of Busquets to stem the onslaught of red shirts last night will weigh on his shoulders for time to come.
