Every football club worth its salt dreams of domestic success. European glory is always an added bonus, but winning domestic silverware is any day a bigger achievement. Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Juventus — irrespective of their performance in the Champions League — have been dominant forces in their respective leagues, making them the most successful teams since the turn of the century. While some clubs have been bagging silverware season after season, a few other decorated clubs haven’t been that fortunate. Here are five top clubs playing in Europe’s top 5 leagues who haven’t won a championship in a long, long time. Special mentions: Arsenal (15 years), Valencia (15 years), Lazio (19).
AS Roma have been flying high in Europe over the last couple of seasons. Last year, they famously eliminated Barcelona in the quarter-finals to book their place in history, but their domestic form, sadly, hasn’t improved much. They won their last Serie A title in the 2000/01 campaign, stretching their drought to 18 years.
Surviving in an era where Juventus are growing more and more powerful by the minute is indeed a difficult task, but the Naples outfit have done their best to stay in the hunt. They came agonisingly close to winning the league last title, last year, but were denied by Juve in the end. Currently, they are on a 19-year barren run in the league.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are standing just a few Matchdays away from history. Having last won the title in 1990, it’s been a 29-year-long barren spell, and the Reds are desperate to end the drought this season itself. They have a one-point advantage at the top of the table with 10 matches to play, meaning that the race will go right down to the wire.
2. Tottenham Hotspur
Since Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment, Tottenham Hotspur have really upped the ante. From a mid table club, they have transformed into outside title contenders. However, with Liverpool and Manchester City flexing their financial muscle, it seems unlikely that the Londoners will be able end their 58-year drought — title in 1960/61 — any time soon.
1. Sevilla FC
La Liga giants Sevilla are considered to be one of the most explosive teams in Europe. They are capable of beating even the best of teams on their home turf, but haven’t been that convincing away from home. The Andalusian outfit have been massively successful in the Europa League over the last decade, but haven’t won the domestic title since 1945/46.
Which of these teams do you see winning their respective league title in few years time?
