The Nigerian entertainment industry has witnessed huge growth and some explicit innovative and initiatives programmes in the last few years. There have been a couple of competitions and shows in the music part of the industry over the years and it has opened doors and opportunities to so many to lots of individuals .
The concept of reality shows is one of the ideologies currently making waves in the entertainment industry in Nigeria. Some Nigerian celebrities have gained recognition and fame through their parents influence while some had to walk through thick and thin to get noticed in their field.
Some of the prominent winners of the reality shows made it into the limelight were they are making waves today. They include:
1. MTN Project Fame : is a music talent TV reality show filmed in Lagos and aired in the West African subcontinent.
The show used to feature contestants from Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, but Liberia and Sierra Leone have been dropped since the 2014 Ebola Outbreak. The show is broadcast by networks in these four countries and across the African continent.
Some of their judges are Praiz, Bibie Brew and Tee-Y Mix, and Faculty members of the
Academy which include: Joke Silva, Lovette Otegbola, Dupe Ige and Ben Ogbeiwi.
Most of the winners from MTN Project Fame since inception are from Nigeria.
This is amazing, and our country can be proud of so many talented people who have conquered the popular talent hunt show. Some of these winners are :
Dare Art Alade: Darey’s big break finally came during the 2004 edition of Project Fame Academy, a well renowned Reality TV show and continent-wide talent hunt and emerged third in the contest.
Darey has been around for over a decade and has remained consistent in the industry from been a disc jockey, TV presenter, entertainment consultant, voice over artist and performing/recording artist. He has also hosted a lot of notable events and awards.
Chidinma Ekile :Chidinma was announced as the competition’s winner on 26 September 2010.
She won a number of prizes, including ₦2.5 million, a 2011 Toyota RAV4, and a production deal and in May 2013, Chidinma signed an endorsement deal with MTN Nigeria.
Chidinma sometimes reveled that she initially declined her admission to the University of Lagos due to her advancement in Project Fame West Africa.
2. Next Movie star: The reality television series, centered around discovering new talents in the acting profession. The show was created in Nigeria by Sola Fajobi in 2004, and in 2016 had grown to have representation from ten African countries. Some of the stars the show produced are :
Tonto Dikeh: Even though she did not emerge the winner, it can be recalled that she was one of the pioneers of the Next movie star Tv reality show in the year 2005.
In 2010, the actress appeared in the movie “Dirty Secrets”, together with the late Muna Obiekwe. Even though this production attracted huge popularity and did not leave anyone indifferent to Tonto Dikeh’s talent, it has also become a very controversial work, because it contained explicit adult scenes.
Some people criticized Tonto Dikeh for performing in such shameful scenes. But regardless, there were many fans and movie critics, who appreciated her work in this movie and thought it is her best one so far.
Despite the controversy, “Dirty Secrets” expanded Tonto Dikeh’s fanbase and brought her more admirers.
Bellinda Effah: Belinda made her first television debut in the 2005 TV series Shallow Waters after which she took a break from the series to feature in the reality show Next Movie Star TV reality show in which she finished 5th position.
She won the Most Promising Act of the Year award at the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards.
She was once a television presenter for Sound City, a Nigerian Entertainment cable station. However, she left the station to start her own TV show titled Lunch Break with Belinda.
3. Big Brother : is a Nigerian reality competition television series, based on the Big Brother television franchise, in which 12 to 14 contestants live in an isolated house and compete for a large cash prize worth $58,252.43 equivalent to 21,000,000 Nigerian Naira at the end of the show by avoiding being evicted from the house by viewers.
Some of the stars it has produced are:
Ebuka: In 2006, he went in as one of an eventual 14 housemates on the first season of the popular reality show Big Brother Nigeria, finishing in eighth place. To date, he is one of the most visibly successful BBN 2006 cast members.
In January 2017, he was announced as the host of the second season of Big Brother Naija as well as the third season. Ebuka was nominated in the On-Air Personality category of The Future Awards for 2007 and 2008.
He also won the Outstanding TV Presenter of the Year (Male) at the Nigerian Broadcaster’s Merit Awards in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2011, he was selected as a Global Shaper – an exclusive group of young emerging leaders across the world – with the World Economic Forum.
In 2013, he was honored by the Federal Government as one of the Best 100 Young Nigerians in one of the events to mark Nigeria’s 100th anniversary as a union.
He has been very consistent and hardworking in the industry that he has become a role model to younger ones.
Bisola: It will come as a suprise to many that Bisola appeared on the 2017 series of Big Brother Naija where she was first runner up.
She was one of the contestants at MTN Project Fame West Africa in 2008 where she came 5th and Iyanya won. In 2017, Bisola became the first runner up of Big Brother Naija.
In 2018, she won the AMVCA Trailblazer Award at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
Bisola has proved her self to be very talented and she has refused to relent on her efforts which mean she plans to add more feathers to her cap soon.
4. Amstel malta box office: AMBO is a Nigerian television reality show launched in 2005.
The show is centered on the cinema of Nigeria, often referred to as Nollywood and had produced several award-winning Nollywood stars such as :
Bayray McNwizu : Bayray came to the limelight after winning the third Amstel Malta Box Office reality show. In 2009, she received a Africa Movie Academy Awards nomination.
She has proven to be very good at what she knows how to do and Some of her movies include : Cindy’s Note, Tales of Eve, Kiss and Tell (2011), Calabash, Lies Men Tell, My Rich Boyfriend (2014), A Lonely Night, Cruel Intentions, The Visit (2015), Tiwa’s Baggage etc
OC Ukeje : O.C came into prominence after winning the Amstel Malta Box Office reality show.
He went on to pursue both music and acting, focusing mainly on acting in stage plays for the first four years of his career before attempting and winning a reality TV show, Amstel Malta Box Office (AMBO).
He got the award for the Most Promising Actor in his 1st movie titled White Waters at the 4th Africa Movie Academy Awards.
5. West Africa Idol: is a talent contest to find a recording artiste, and it is shown through out the West African region. Some of the winners of the series are:
Timi Dakolo : Timi Dakolo emerged winner of the inaugural season of Idols West Africa in 2007.
With his victory, he got a recording contract with Sony BMG, in addition to other prizes.In 2006, Dakolo auditioned for reality show Idols West Africa in Calabar.
Omawunmi: Omawunmi gained attention after the 2007 West African Idols.
Omawumi with her strong voice and out-going personality, was voted the 1st runner-up of the competition.
Since then, she has had numerous performances on the stage with musicians such as P-Square, 2face Idibia, D’Banj, Banky W, M.I, Sasha, 9ice, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Carl Thomas, Angie Stone and Donell Jones, Angelique Kidjo , among others.
