Of the 22 matches contested by Leicester City in the English top flight this term, the Nigeria international has gone the distance in 21 games while he came off the bench in the first half against Brighton & Hove. Ndidi averages 3.1 tackles per game, 1.9 interceptions, 2.3 clearances and 0.2 blocks per game.

Shooting from distance is part of the central midfielder’s repertoire of skills and he has averaged 1.9 shots per game. He opened his account for the season against West Ham in October and netted what proved to be only a consolation as Leicester City were beaten 2-1 by Southampton this past weekend.

Again! Ndidi shows why he is one of the best midfielders in the world, see AMAZING stats

Over the weekend, Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi showed why he is one of the best midfielders in the world by putting up a good performance for his Leicester City side. Leicester website, in its assessment of their defeat to Southampton in the Premier League yesterday, hailed the impact of Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi despite the hosts losing 2-1. After James Ward-Prowse and Shane Long struck in the opening 45 minutes for the Saints at the King Power, Ndidi popped up in the right place to halve the deficit, scoring his second goal of the season in the process.

Ndidi has started all but one game for Claude Puel’s men in the division this term, logging a total of 1,948 minutes. “In the right place at the right time to convert Ricardo Pereira’s pass and halve Southampton’s advantage just before the hour mark, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi gave Leicester hope of a comeback”, it wrote.

“This season, he has completed the most successful passes for City, making 885 in total, while he also made the most tackles of any Leicester player, completing 51 dispossessions – emphasising his importance in midfield”, it wrote.  Barring injury or any last-ditch situation, Ndidi is set to represent the Super Eagles in their bid to win this year’s African Cup of Nations.

Nigerian Exports: Ndidi scores, Iwobi shines, Success, Balogun, Iheanacho all on the bench

A round-up of Nigerian players that were in action for their respective clubs around the world at the weekend, with Ndidi and Iwobi leading the line for the Nigerians.

In the early kickoff at the London Stadium, Alex Iwobi was one of the few shining lights for the Gunners in their dismal showing and played the full game. Teammate Bukayo Saka was not in the 18 for this one.

At the King Power Stadium, it was a disappointing afternoon for Leicester City after they lost 2-1 to Southampton. It was 2-0 to the Saints at the break thanks to goals from James Ward Prowse and Shane Long but Wilfred Ndidi pulled one back for the Foxes on 58 minutes.

The Nigerian midfielder played the full game while compatriot, Kelechi Iheanacho was an unused substitute in the match.

At the American Express Community Stadium, league leaders Liverpool beat Brighton & Hove 1-0. Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun watched proceedings from the bench for the third straight game.

Elsewhere, Watford came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park (London). The Hornets number ten Isaac Success did not taste action for the first time in the Premier League this term.It was a goalless stalemate at the Cardiff City Stadium between Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town. Denmark U21 international Philip Billing played the entirety of the game for the Terriers.

In the late kickoff at Stamford Bridge, Victor Moses is not in The Blues 18 against Newcastle United.

Ola Aina was on the losing end, when Totino lost at home to Fiorentina in the round of 16 of the Coppa Italia. He played for 89 minutes before being subbed.

In Spain, Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo was in top form again as Leganes picked all three points at home, defeating SD Huesca 1-0 and picking all three points, while also winning a clean sheet.

Samuel Chukwueze started for Villarreal in their shock 2-1 loss at home to Madrid side, Getafe. Chukwueze played for 57 minutes before being subbed off in the match.

Samuel Kalu was also at the losing end in the first Ligue 1 match of the year as Bordeaux lost 1-0 to Nice. Kalu played all 90 minutes of the encounter.

Leicester 1-2 Southampton: Ndidi goal not enough to beat 10-man Saints

Super Egles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi pulled one back, but he could not help the Foxes to a victory as Southampton defeated Leicester City 2-1 away from home at the King Power Stadium, after Ward-Prowse and Shane Long had scored first half goals in the Premier League encounter on Saturday.

Ten-man Southampton produced a fine second-half rearguard display to beat Leicester City 2-1 and move out of the Premier League’s relegation zone. Nampalys Mendy’s clumsy foul on Shane Long allowed James Ward-Prowse to drill home the opener from the penalty spot in the 11th minute, ending a run of four league visits to the King Power Stadium without a goal four Southampton.

Yan Valery was sent off shortly before Long double the lead in first-half injury-time, but a much-improved Leicester halved the arrears through Wilfred Ndidi just before the hour. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side faced relentless pressure from thereon in, but Southampton held firm for a crucial three points – their first away top-flight win at Leicester since 2001 – that lifted them out of the bottom three.

Leicester, dumped out of the FA Cup by fourth-tier Newport County last week, remain seventh. Stuart Armstrong had threatened twice by the time Ward-Prowse thumped a penalty high and left of Kasper Schmeichel after Mendy recklessly dragged Long to ground. Leicester were all at sea but nearly levelled when James Maddison’s free-kick fell for Wes Morgan, who was denied on the line by Jan Bednarek.

Saints saw Valery receive a second yellow for a needless pull on Marc Albrighton, but they were 2-0 up by the break. Ricardo Pereira failed to deal with Alex McCarthy’s punt and Long outmuscled Mendy on the left of the box before curling past Schmeichel. Leicester unsurprisingly had more verve after the break and Ndidi knew little about his effort off the knee from Pereira’s cross but it was a lifeline nonetheless.

Unsurprisingly it was one-way traffic from there and Jamie Vardy should have done better to direct Maddison’s cross goalwards from eight yards. Harvey Barnes and Maddison each tried their luck from range and Ndidi nodded wide from close range as Leicester pushed for a late leveller, but there was too much predictability about their play as Southampton returned to the south coast with a welcome win.

What does it mean? Saints taking shape under Hasenhuttl

Saints’ initial upturn in fortunes under Hasenhuttl stuttered with a four-match winless streak in all competitions before this fixture, but there were plenty of encouraging signs here. The team pressed, harried and transitioned to attack well, while defensively they were solid following Valery’s red. The threat of relegation obviously still looms, but on this evidence, it is a battle they can certainly win.

Long stakes his claim as Redmond impresses

Hasenhuttl this week spoke of his desire for a new striker and allowed Manolo Gabbiadini to re-join Sampdoria, but Long – making his first league start since November 4 – did his chances of regular minutes no harm, cleverly winning the spot-kick and taking his goal well. Nathan Redmond also deserves credit. The winger can be a mercurial talent, but was a constant livewire with his pace and direct running on the break.

Mendy’s moments of madness prove costly

There were several under-par first-half performances from Leicester, with Ben Chilwell not his usual reliable self at full-back. But it really was a day to forget for Mendy, who gave away the penalty and allowed himself to be beaten far too easily for Long’s effort. He was unsurprisingly hauled off at the break as part of a double change from ex-Saints boss Claude Puel, which included an outing for the recalled Barnes.

What’s next?

The Foxes will look to bounce back when they make the trip from east to west Midlands to face Wolves next Saturday, while a rejuvenated Southampton welcome Everton the St Mary’s Stadium.

1. West Ham United vs Arsenal

The duo of Alex Iwobi and Bukayo Saka are most likely going to be dressed on Saturday by Arsenal at the London Stadium as Unai Emery’s side visit West Ham United. The game which kicks off at 1.30pm Nigerian time is a London derby and one that will be interesting to see as the fifth placed Gunners seek to overtake Chelsea in fourth place in the EPL table. Iwobi has scored thrice for Arsenal in the Premier League so far and with Henrikh Mkhitaryan still out injured the Nigerian will most certainly be deployed on the left side of the Arsenal attack while Saka could come off the bench.

2. Villarreal vs Getafe

Arguably the most promising young Nigerian player in Europe at the moment, Samuel Chukwueze is expected to be in action on Saturday when Villarreal host Getafe. Chukwueze’s performances for the Yellow Submarine has attracted interests from some big clubs in Europe and all eyes will be on the Super Eagle, who has named in the top 50 most promising young footballers in European football. Villarreal are currently placed 19th in the La Liga table while their visitors are 7th and a good show by the winger could lift his club out of the relegation zone. And what more, the January transfer window is still open.

3. Leicester vs Southampton

The hot debate since Tuesday’s CAF Awards has been Wilfred Ndidi’s shocking and surprising omission from CAF’s Best XI for the calendar year 2018 in favour of Atletico Madrid and Ghana’s Thomas Partey as well as not winning the Young Player of the Year won by Achraf Hakimi. Ndidi would definitely must have heard the feedback back home and will be buoyed to prove his doubters wrong in this game against the Saints at 4pm Nigerian time. The Super Eagles defensive midfielder has been one of the best tacklers in European football and he will surely be angling to prove his mettle when they play Southampton. Kelechi Iheanacho has not been in fantastic form when given his chances so more more attention will be paid to Ndidi especially after he was shunned in both categories of awards.

4. Brighton vs Liverpool

It is unknown whether manager Chris Houghton will hand an opportunity to Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun when Brighton host Liverpool at the Amex Stadium but should the Nigerian get his chance to impress it is one that he must grab gleefully and make the most of. Balogun played in successive games during the festive period when Shane Duffy was out due to a three game ban with mixed performances. Injuries to key players seems to be the only hope the former Mainz centre back has to impress on Saturday.

5. Nice vs Bordeaux

Image result for samuel kalu

Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu is expected to play a significant role for French Ligue 1 side Bordeaux when they play away to OG Nice 8pm Nigerian time on Saturday. Kalu has scored twice in 13 league games for Bordeaux this season and his rather low goals return is due to injury which inadvertently saw him miss some games.  The talk of a possible return to the national team of Victor Moses could propel Kalu’s improved performances for club and country.

6. Crystal Palace vs Watford

Selhurst Park will witness a good game in prospect as Crystal Palace welcome Watford that parades Super Eagles striker Isaac Success. Success has a poor return of just one goal this season in the Premier League in 21 games and will be hoping to improve on that. The match which kicks off 4pm Nigerian time is expected to be a physical battle between both sides which the former youth international will relish.

7. Atletico Madrid vs Levante

It is unclear whether Moses Simon will be in action on Sunday when 10th placed Levante visit the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium to face second in the table Atletico Madrid. Back to fitness, Simon has played just five league games thus far mainly from the bench with a grand total of 61 minutes played only. The Nigerian winger missed the 2018 World Cup due to injury and as the preparations for the 2019 AFCON continue with the upcoming dead rubber against Seychelles and top friendly with Egypt in March, ‘Daddy’ will be out to impress.

It is time for us to push.” He added: ”I felt that Wilfred Ndidi and then several of our players who are doing very well (should have been included), although I am not very good at watching football so much, it’s just when I see some of our players playing important matches. ”One person I recommended and I feel should be there is Ndidi.”

Ndidi does not deserve a place – Super Eagles legend blasts Ndidi, supports CAF on team of the year

Former Nigeria international defender Celestine Babayaro says Wilfred Ndidi of Leicester City didn’t have a better 2018 than the players selected ahead of him in the CAF Best XI during the recently concluded CAF Awards.

The omission of Ndidi infuriated most Nigerians who are of the opinion that the midfielder did enough in the year under review to earn a spot in Africa’s Best XI players owing to his consistent display for Leicester City last season. However, Babayaro who also played for another English Premier League side in Chelsea during his playing days insisted that although Ndidi did very well last season, he still didn’t do enough like the duo of Thomas Partey and Naby Keita who were voted ahead of him.

”Ndidi didn’t do badly to be honest, but in 2018 Partey and Keita did more mainly due to their involvement in the Champions League and Europa League, something Ndidi didn’t have with Leicester last season. If we are to be fair that gave them an edge over Ndidi who didn’t do badly. Nigerians should understand that we dominated this award in time past and we will no doubt do same in the future with the wave of young talents coming through“, he concluded”, Babayaro said.

Ndidi’s Leicester City teammate ends miserable Premier League spell

Super Eagles midfield star Wilfred Ndidi has seen his Leicester City teammate, Fousseni Diabate, leave the Premier League club in a loan move to Sivasspor in the Turkish Super Lig. The Mali international has made the move to Turkey for the rest of the 2018-19 campaign having found playing time limited in manager Claude Puel’s squad this term.

The 23-year-old joined Leicester City from French Ligue 2 side Gazelec Ajaccio in the January transfer window of 2018, but has played only three games this season across all competitions including one appearance in the English top-flight against Fulham in December. His only goals for the Foxes came on his debut appearance in a FA Cup fixture against Peterborough United in January 2018 where he scored a brace in their 5-1 win back.

Having sealed the move which promises to see him get more playing time in Turkey, Diabete will be linking another African – Cote d’Ivoire international Arouna Kone – in Hakan Keles’ set-up and will be looking to make his debut in a league encounter against Alanyaspor on January 20. Sivasspor are currently placed ninth in the Turkish Super Lig.
