“Today, under President Buhari, Nigerians can dream and hope because he has rebranded governance and put the country on the path of sustainable growth and development.

“He is investing in infrastructure and reinventing the most ambitious social programme in the history of the nation.

“The President is ensuring that the people do not loot the common resources and ensuring that Nigeria is self-sufficient in food production

“Above all, he has brought honour and respect back to the country and fighting all sorts of insecurity in the country,” he said.

Reacting to the allegation of non-submission of the President’s certificate to INEC, the minister said it was “a non-issue and a mere distraction”

“We have moved beyond that. Let me quote what former President Olusegun Obasanjo said in 2015 during this saga of the President’s certificate.

“Obasanjo said that it is an insult on a man, who rose to the echelon in Nigeria Army, attended the War College in the US and Staff College in Nigeria, for anyone to start asking whether he has a certificate or not.

“I think I want to rest this case on that because it is a non-issue,” the minister said.

Speaking on the President’s health, Mohammed said that the President had fully recovered and fit to discharge his duties.

The minister also said they were not worried by the endorsement of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, by Obasanjo because “it is Nigerians that will decide who will govern them”.

“It is Nigerians that are going to vote at the 2019 elections.

“They will make a choice between going back to the era of inefficiency, looting, decay in infrastructure and the era of integrity when the economy is being revived and insurgency is being tackled.

“It is not what Obasanjo says that matters because I am sure Nigerians will make the right choice,” he said.

Fake news assuming more vicious dimension: Lai Mohammed

Nigeria’s Information Minister Lai Mohammed threatening that Nigeria was going to make Israel pay for taking in fugitive separatist, Nnamdi Kanu, complete with quotes and all, was among the top trending topics on Twitter Nigeria on a busy Monday morning.

I would tell my colleague not to touch the story and made sure no one on the news desk touched the story until we got some kind of confirmation from Abuja.

Image result for Lai Mohammed

Two phone calls later to Mohammed’s office in Abuja and we were proven right. He never made the remarks attributed to him. One mischievous individual with an internet connection and a weather beaten smartphone, who sat in a dingy apartment probably in suburban Lagos, had cooked up a story, unleashed it on the internet and watched as faux activists analyzed and pontificated a figment of his own imagination.

It was pure madness. Welcome to the sad era of fake news!

Image result for Lai Mohammed

“I was in London when I heard the story about Nnamdi Kanu surfacing in Israel. I was not in a position to make any statement. But before I knew it, within a few hours, I saw my picture with a story saying that I had actually given Israel ultimatum to return Nnamdi Kanu otherwise, we will send them missiles.

“I just laughed. It speaks to what we are talking about fake news because it is probably the biggest threat in the run-up to the elections”, Mohammed said.

For once, you just have to agree with Mohammed. The rate at which fake news is being churned out by Nigerians with some online following these days, is alarming.

Image result for Lai Mohammed

Two days after Mohammed was said to have said something he never said, the fake news industry in Nigeria declared former President Ernest Shonekan dead. It was a lie as well.

Go through your social media feeds daily and fake news stares you in the face. It’s almost as though peddling and passing on lies as facts has become the new normal. The cold truth is that it will get even worse as Nigeria prepares to hold a general election in February 2019, with propagandists and partisans handed miserable amounts of money to churn out lies just to diminish an opponent.

Fake news is a global phenomenon these days. The United States is still reeling from the effect of fake news and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was grilled by US lawmakers earlier in the year for allowing his platform to be seized by fake news merchants during the 2016 US elections that threw up Donald Trump as President.

We all have a duty to fight fake news by calling the merchants out online and shaming them for all it’s worth. Fake news can burn down an entire nation, result in a diplomatic row and lead to sectarian violence. Those who use the internet have a duty to behave responsibly. We can’t afford to have it any other way.

President Buhari’s Government has defeated the Boko Haram group-Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed has praised President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration for the way it has defeated the terrorist group Boko Haram saying the group does not have the capacity to attack anymore.

Image result for buhariThe Minister said this among many other issues in a presentation at The Chatham House in London. He said fake news is the greatest threat to next year’s general elections and also it will show if Nigerians have learned from the lessons of last elections.

Image result for lai mohammedHe said: “As the 2019 general elections approach, Nigeria faces a new challenge, a threat not just to the country peace and security, but indeed its very existence. It is the dual challenge of fake news and hate speech.

Image result for lai mohammed

“Yes, the fake news problem is not unique to Nigeria, but it poses a more potent threat to the country because of its multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural status. It is also a clear and present danger to the nation’s unity. Naysayers have latched onto the fake news phenomenon to exploit the country’s fault lines and inflame passion.

Image result for lai mohammed

“For example, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) recently did a report on how fake news is aggravating the persistent farmers-herders clashes. Pictures of gun-toting herdsmen from other lands are routinely used to depict the herdsmen in Nigeria. Age-long clashes between farmers and herders have suddenly been dressed in the garb of religion and ethnicity.

“Ignored is the fact that the clashes have become more persistent because of a mixture of many factors, including population explosion, effects of climate change, keener contest for dwindling natural resources and sheer criminality. Religion and ethnicity are not the reasons for these clashes.”

Mohammed explained that the Federal Government spent N2.7trillion on infrastructure in the last three and a half years. He also said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has dislodged Boko Haram insurgents who no longer have the capacity to attack.

The minister said before Buhari came on board, Boko Haram was controlling territories, which were almost the size of Lebanon. He also said the government places premium on Nigeria’s unity by spreading projects across the nation’s six geopolitical zones.

He said: “Since coming into office, the President Muhammadu Buhari Administration has embarked on an unprecedented renewal of the nation’s infrastructure, investing an unprecedented N2.7 trillion on roads, rails, power, and other similar projects.

“But it is not enough to embark on these projects, it is important to let the public know the extent and spread of such projects to foster a sense of national unity. This explains why we kick-started a nationwide tour of Federal Government projects nationwide, with not less than 25 journalists accompanying me on each trip.Image result for lai mohammed

“Till date, we have inspected many of such projects, including the new Lagos to Kano standard gauge rail line, the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in the Southwest that connects the port city of Lagos to other parts of the country, the new intra-city rail line connecting the Abuja city centre to the International Airport, the Enugu-Port Harcourt freeway in the Southeast and the Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road in central Nigeria.”

The minister said the Buhari administration remains committed to the nation’s unity. He added: “Nigeria continues to struggle to forge a national consensus, to accept its diverse ethnic groups as the source of its national power and cohesion, irrespective of religion, status, culture and geographical location. The challenge is made more daunting by the fact that the large country is occupied by diverse people, with diverse languages and culture. In other words, it is a multi-national state, a conglomeration of ethnic nations, each with its distinctive character and ethos.

Image result for lai mohammed

“Why is the question of national unity so important? This is simply because, without a united country, all its component parts will be working at cross purposes with conflicting signals that will constantly threaten the foundation and the very existence of the country. This is more so in a country as diverse as Nigeria, which has had sufficient doses of ethnic and religious strives at various times in its nationhood journey, including a bitter, 30-month civil war and the Boko Haram insurgency.”
