SAD: About 2 percent of Nigerians are suffering from diabetes

About four million Nigerians are affected by diabetes according to the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, University of Lagos, Dr Olufemi Fasanmade. Fasanmade made the statement during the unveiling of Insulin Degludec, a once-daily basal insulin for the treatment of diabetes manufactured by Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals,  last Friday at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.

He noted that more than half of the people living with diabetes in the country were not diagnosed because most often, diabetes, especially type 2, might not have any symptom. In terms of mortality, Fasanmade stressed that the number of people who died of diabetes was higher than those who lost their lives to HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.

“In the hospital where I work, about a third of the patients who come in with stroke, heart failure or kidney failure, have diabetes to blame for their conditions. So, it is a much bigger problem than malaria, HIV or tuberculosis,” Fasanmade said.

Also, a professor from the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetology at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, Thomas Pieber, said that maintaining good blood glucose control with insulin treatment could be challenging for healthcare professionals and patients due to concerns over low blood pressure.

Pieber also said that the symptoms of low blood sugar might include trembling, hunger, sweating, difficulty in concentrating, among others. “Severe low blood pressure may lead to seizure, coma and death. Nocturnal low blood sugar is a real concern for people with diabetes as it is often unpredictable and unrecognised,” he said.

Stating that the duration of action for the new product is more than 42 hours, was the Corporate Vice-President, Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Mr Mads Bo Larsen, who said, “We have used it on our patients without low blood sugar.

Compared to the previous basal insulin, the risk of low blood sugar is significantly less because of less reliability in its action,” Larsen said.

Medical practisioner have kicked against taking energy drinks as it affects the body negatively. It only needs 90 minutes to damage the body and can cause heart attack among other diseases it can bring.

A new study has found that consuming just one energy drink could increase the risk of heart attack and stroke in 90 minutes, with researchers saying the drinks narrow blood vessels – which can restrict the flow of blood to vital organs.

While previous studies have found a link between energy drinks and stomach, nerve and heart problems, the new findings from the University of Texas in Houston are among the first to shed light on the potential increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

​Just One Energy Drink Can Increase Risk Of Heart Attacks Or Strokes, According To Study

Researchers looked at 44 students from the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, with all participants in their 20s and classed as ‘healthy’ non-smokers.

They tested the function of endothelium, the layer of cells lining the surface of blood vessels – the dysfunction of which has been shown to be an indicator of heart attacks as arteries aren’t able to fully dilate.

A new study had found that consuming energy drinks can narrow blood vessels, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes (file image)

Participants’ endothelial function was tested before each of them drank a 24-ounce energy drinkbefore being tested again 90 minutes later. Within that time, the internal diameter of blood vessels had, on average, been decreased by nearly half.

Dr John Higgins, a professor of medicine at the McGovern School, said: “As energy drinks are becoming more and more popular, it is important to study the effects of these drinks on those who frequently drink them and better determine what, if any, is a safe consumption pattern.”

Other past studies have also explored the effects of energy drinks on young people. In one study from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, researchers found that 55% of 12 to 24-year-olds surveyed reported suffering conditions such as vomiting, chest pains and even seizures after having the drinks.

Lead author of the study, Professor David Hammond said: “Most risk assessments to date have used coffee as a reference for estimating the health effects of energy drinks, however, it is clear these products pose a greater health risk. The health effects from energy [drinks] could be due to different ingredients than coffee, or the ways in which they are consumed, including with alcohol or during physical activity.”

TV chef Jamie Oliver has also been very vocal about the potential risks of energy drinks – having campaigned for children to be banned from buying the products.

Teachers from across the country have told me how their lessons are disrupted in classrooms because of these drinks, packed with stimulants.

A large U.S. study designed to gauge the health benefits of vitamin D and fish oil supplements concludes that the omega-3 oil can dramatically reduce the odds of a heart attack while vitamin D’s benefits seem to come from lowering the risk of death from cancer.

Neither vitamin D nor fish oil lowered the odds of stroke or of getting cancer in the first place in the trial, whose participants did not know whether they were taking the real supplements or a dummy pill.

The heart attack rate in fish oil recipients was 28 per cent lower than among those who got the dummy pill, or placebo, and it was 77 per cent lower among African-American participants — although the lead author of the study told Reuters that this dramatic drop in risk among black participants needs to be confirmed.

For people taking vitamin D who developed cancer, the death rate from cancer was 25 per cent lower, possibly because the vitamin “may affect the biology of the tumour so it’s less likely to spread and become metastatic,” said lead author Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of the division of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“Therefore, you may see a reduction in cancer death but not see a reduction in the first diagnosis, which might take a much longer trial,” she said in a telephone interview. “If you’re talking about prevention of cancer, that may take treatment for well over a decade.”

It took a few years of vitamin D use for the reduction in cancer deaths to become clear. The results were reported Saturday at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions meeting in Chicago and online in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The VITAL study

Both supplements have a reputation for being beneficial based on animal tests and observational studies involving large diverse populations or ethnic groups. But large studies that directly test the benefits of vitamin D and fish oil in supplement form have given inconsistent results.

The new study, known as VITAL, is the first large test of both in the general population. Most previous research has focused on volunteers with an elevated risk of heart attack, stroke and/or cancer.

The researchers gave 2,000 international units of vitamin D per day, 1 gram of marine omega-3 fatty acids, or placebo supplements to 25,871 volunteers aged 50 or older. None had a history of cancer, heart attack or stroke. At least half stayed in the study for more than five years.

Based on the new findings, “people already taking vitamin D or fish oil will feel there’s no reason to stop,” Manson said.

Others may want to wait “because we are going to be publishing findings for other endpoints — diabetes, cognitive function, depression, autoimmune diseases — over the next six months,” she said. “These findings may help people decide if the benefits are likely to outweigh the risks for them.”

And people should not be taking higher doses than what was used in the study, Manson noted. With megadoses, “the risk may outweigh the benefit. With high doses of vitamin D there can be a risk of high blood calcium levels developing. Some have suggested a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, falls and even fractures.”

Other findings

Among fish oil recipients, the rates of death from any cause, death from cancer and death from heart disease in general were not significantly different than for people not taking fish oil supplements. In addition, the collective odds of having a heart attack, stroke or death from any cardiovascular cause were essentially the same whether people were taking fish oil or placebo.

It was only when researchers teased out individual elements of heart disease — such as the rate of heart attack, the rate of fatal heart attack and the need for angioplasty — that a benefit stood out. Even a little fish oil seemed to help. Volunteers who consumed less fish than average —  less than one-and-a-half servings per week and received the real omega-3 supplements saw a 40 per cent reduction in the risk of a heart attack.

In the vitamin D study, which was “the largest high-dose randomized trial of vitamin D in the world,” according to Manson, supplement and non-supplement recipients had similar rates of heart attack, stroke, death from heart attack and cancers of the breast, prostate, or the colon and rectum. It was only the odds of dying from cancer that were reduced.

For more, let’s look a bit closer at this study published in the medical journal The Lancet, in which researchers from McMaster University in Canada looked at a whopping 130,000 people from 21 different countries, all of whom were between 35 and 70 years old. What did they look for in these people? Well, their dietary habits were noted, and then separated into two camps – reduced-fat dairy and full-fat dairy.

So here’s the thing: eating more than two servings a day of that processed cow milk was conducive to seeing some major decreases in not only your risk of a stroke, but for risk of cardiovascular disease as well. They also found that while cheese did have an impact on those results, you can also see some pretty good benefits by consuming yoghurt or milk.

For test subjects who ate less than 0.5 servings of dairy a day, their mortality rate rose to 44.4 percent overall, with five percent of that being down to cardiovascular disease alone.

Of course, we don’t readily associate eating a lot of cheese with lowering our chance of death, but Ian Givens, a professor of food chain nutrition at Reading University in the UK, says that this study is vital to changing the public perception of dairy, hopefully helping to change the way dietary guidelines look at dairy intake.

“It also adds weight to the evidence that saturated fats from dairy [probably apart from butter] are not associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk, unlike some other sources,” explained Givens.

Mahshid Dehghan, who is an investigator at the Nutrition Epidemiology program at the Population Health Research Institute of McMaster University as well as the lead author on this study, and she argued that we shouldn’t rule out dairy products just because they happen they happen to produce a lot of fatty acids.

“Dairy products contain a range of potentially beneficial compounds including specific amino acids, medium-chain and odd-chain saturated fats, milk fat globule phospholipids, unsaturated and branched-chain fats, natural trans fats, vitamin K1/K2, and calcium, and can further be fermented or contain probiotics, many of which may also affect health outcomes.”

Of course, the study needs more research to figure out exactly why dairy leads to so many health benefits, but we can all rest easy tonight knowing that extra cheese pizza is actually really good for your health. Some might even call it medicine

BEWARE! CPC Confirms Killer Beans Is Real

Those thinking that the viral warning about killer beans in circulation is another hoax targeted at making people panic unnecessarily must read this.

The Consumer Protection Council have made their findings and have advised consumers to beware of contaminated beans currently being sold in some market.

It called on consumers to properly wash their beans before consumption as well as make sufficient enquiries before engaging in new purchases.

The Council gave the advice in a statement released by its Director-General, Mr Babatunde Irukera.

The warning came on the heels of a video that had gone viral where some people were seeing using sniper to preserve beans.

The Council said in addition to the cooking method and making enough enquiries before purchase, consumers should sufficiently wash their food items before cooking.

The statement said “Thoroughly washing food items before consumption or preparation for consumption is a generally accepted method of protecting and promoting safety.

“The CPC has recently confirmed by credible information that retailers, mostly in the open market, are using a pesticide, 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate compound, otherwise marketed and known as ‘Sniper’, to preserve beans and more particularly to eliminate or protect from weevils.”

Irukera, in the statement, pointed out that sniper, by its chemical composition and nature, was potentially injurious when human beings were unduly exposed by inhalation, absorption, direct skin contact or ingestion.

“The risk of injury on account of the consumption of beans exposed to or treated with Sniper is also existential, even though, an unintended consequence,” it added.

Last year, three siblings trading in beans on Adenekan Street, Alagbado, Lagos State, were arrested by the police for allegedly selling “poisonous beans” to members of the public.

It was learnt that the traders – Faith Ogbona, Chidioke Ogbona and Sunday Ogbona – were arrested by policemen from the Alagbado division after being alerted by a woman, who caught Chidioke applying Sniper, an insecticide, on the bean

While Chidioke and Sunday were picked up on Friday, their elder brother, who owned the shop, was nabbed on Sunday when he went to the station to secure their bail.

Although the shop owner confessed that his suppliers in Maiduguri, Borno State, where he bought the goods, used some chemicals including Sniper and DD Force, to preserve beans, he said his brother carried out the act without his consent.

He said: “I have never mixed beans with chemicals, but I have been buying the one with chemicals from Maiduguri. If it is stored for a long time, it is not dangerous for human consumption.”
