#10YearsChallenge: Top food chains in Nigeria, then and now

In light of the latest trend on social media, lets take a look at the top restaurants back then and right now.

What restaurants have stood the test of time?

Fast food used to be a huge part of entertainment back in the day. Outings used to mean going to the most popular food chain in town, buying a meal and sitting there to relax.

These restaurants put more efforts in making their restaurants as spacious and traditional as possible, with minimal effort in the actual food. With the exception of a few top restaurants who had an amazing item they were known for, most of the food sold at the various restaurants were mostly traditional, basic and indistinguishable.

The #10YearsChallenge takes us on a fun journey back 10 years, when these restaurants were actually in vogue:

1. Mr Bigg’s

Mr Bigg’s is the oldest fast food chain in Nigeria as it was founded by UAC Foods in 1973. It quickly became a top dog in the business all over the country and retained its position for years. Its fried chicken and meat pies were undefeated. Branches are still open and active all over the country.

2. Savanna chum chum

Savannah chum chum Abuja [Savannah suites] Savannah chum chum Abuja

Long before 2009, Savannah Chum Chum was a big food chain mostly in Abuja, part of the Savannah Suites group. It had families queuing to get a taste every weekend. This was before they shut down a few years ago.

3. Tantalizers

Tantalizers fast food chain [Nairametrics] Tantalizers fast food chain

Tantalizers opened its first location in Festac Town, Lagos, in 1997. They were known for their hamburgers initially but became a top name for all things fast food all over the country. Tantalizers still has active branches.

4. Tetrazzini

Tetrazzini was launched as Fast Food and African Restaurant in Isolo, in 1999. Since then, they have become a household name.

5. Chicken republic

Chicken republic fast food chain [Logbaby] Chicken republic fast food chain

Chicken republic was founded in 2004 and rose to the top spot because of their chicken and fair prices. They were referred to as the KFC of Nigeria, that is until KFC actually began a franchise here. They are actually still one of the top fast food chains in the country, changing the game with their affordable “Refuel” package.

6. Mama Cass

Mama Cass [Jolly]

Mama Cass was known for selling all types of delicious traditional food in its various outlets all over the country. They were basically “bukkas” with aesthetics. Some branches are still scattered around the country.

7. Tastee Fried Chicken

TFC has been a top food chain in Lagos since its opening in 1996. It was and still is known for its chicken and fair prices. TFC is still active.

Some of these fast food chains, which were forecasted to last more than 10 years, have either died off or lost stamina in the struggle to remain relevant. Many Nigerians have traded their need for FAST food (in every sense) for ambiance, exotic food and chefs, and eating spaces with unique value proposition in both design and food.

  1. Chicken Republic
  2. KFC
  3. Mr Biggs
  4. Sweet Sensation
  5. Dominoes
  6. The Place
  7. Bukka hut

While one or two names have survived and thrived over the years, one can only wonder if the fast food business is dying a slow death in Nigeria.

7 ways you can become a better friend

There are plenty of suggestions on how to become a “better” person. Whether it’s exercising more, reading more, or adjusting your attitude, there are many resources that can steer you in the right direction and most of us strive to better ourselves, every step of the journey.

However, there is one area for development that might be the key to making your life a whole lot better. Instead of just becoming a better person, how about we become better friends?

1. Communicate with others with honestly and with respect.

Be willing to express your own perspective and your feelings, but do so from a place of kindness and sensitivity to the feelings of others.

2. Always be a person of your word and stand behind the promises and intentions you make to others. Be the kind of friend that people can trust completely.

3. Most of us feel good about ourselves when others are able to trust us; many of us take pride in being perceived as trustworthy.

Make sure you share the positive feelings by being willing to trust others. Take a leap of faith and model for others how trust can be given and earned.

Here are 7 ways you can become a better friend

4. Show up for others, literally and figuratively, and do exactly what you say you will do.

Be willing to put yourself out for a friend knowing that there may be a time in the future when you need your friend to put themselves out for you.

5. Recognising that we a ll have a shortcoming or two and accepting that as part of being human is a significant aspect of enduring loyalty.

Don’t give up on friends who falter or who might not be as readily present in your life as you would like. By being loyal to your friends, you are building a strong support network. We don’t always know when we might find ourselves free-falling through life and having a group of friends who are there to break your fall usually is much more likely to happen if you’ve done the same for them.

Here's all the ways that you can become a better friend
Here’s all the ways that you can become a better friend

6. Practice and master the much-valued gift of empathy for others. Be willing to put yourself in another’s shoes.

Imagine the world from the position of another and you will soon learn the value of this skill in building relationships built on a sense of shared understanding.

7. Learn to be present with a friend and to listen without feeling the need to interject just because there’s a pause in the conversation.

We grow through learning and if we don’t listen to others, we cannot grow as people or as friends.

5 stages of loving. Check them out!!

Just as with life where there are times and seasons – a time to be young and a time to be old, to be pregnant and be delivered of the baby and on and on like that, so are there stages to love and relationships.

It’s what the experts say. And they add that with relationships, there are five stages. According to YourTango’s Jed Diamond, here are the five stages of love:

Stage 1: Falling

This is the part where everything is new and covered in beauty and so much… mushiness. Butterflies in the belly? This is the stage where you get them. You are uncontrollably thinking about the other person, getting your head in the clouds at the prospect of what could be…

“Falling in love is nature’s trick to get humans to pick a mate so that our species carries on. It feels so wonderful because we are awash in ‘love hormones’, such as dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, testosterone, and estrogen,” Diamond explains.

Stage Two: Become a couple

At this stage, things are official. Two people in an exclusive relationship with each other.

“During this phase,” Diamond tells YourTango,  “we experience less of the falling head-over-heels “in love” feelings. We feel more bonded with our partner. We feel warm and cuddly. The sex may not be as wild, but it’s deeply satisfying.

We feel safe, cared for, cherished, and appreciated. We feel close and protected. We often think this is the ultimate level of love and we expect it to go on forever.”

Stage Three: Disillusionment

By the time you get to this stage, what you find is that the newness of the whole thing has worn off and reality is starkly revealed to you. You’re deep enough in the relationship to see the flaws, the not-so-great things about your partner, their humanity.

And this is where things are most tricky. Fears and doubts and questions begin to form in your head.

Diamond says: “For too many relationships, this is the beginning of the end. This is a period where things begin to feel bad. It can occur slowly or can feel like a switch is flipped and everything goes wrong. Little things begin to bother us. We feel less loved and cared for. We feel trapped and want to escape.”

But of course, within this relationship crisis there is an opportunity to love more and more deeply. If you break through, you find a love that isn’t dependent upon someone being perfect, but loved perfectly.

Stage Four: Longevity

This is the stage of lasting love. It is where you find yourself when you push past the difficulties in stage three. You become more understanding of each other, more trusting, more patient and more… unified.

“There’s nothing more satisfying than being with a partner who sees you and loves you for who you are. They understand that your hurtful behavior is not because you are mean and unloving, but because you have been wounded in the past and the past still lives with you. As we better understand and accept our partner, we can learn to love ourselves ever more deeply,” Diamond explains.

Stage 5: Exemplary love

“If we can learn to overcome our differences and find real, lasting love in our relationships, perhaps we can work together to find real, lasting love in the world,” Diamond says, pointing out the importance of having relationships that can inspire other relationships.

Partners whose relationship or marriage work can serve as a model for other partners to work with.

At this stage, you and your partner are that couple – Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva kinda thing.

BEAUTIFUL!! Take a look at the cleanest beaches in West Africa

West Africa is not exactly what comes to mind when you think about the most beautiful beaches but it does have some that stand out.

These are the top 5 cleanest beaches in the Western hemisphere of the continent.

When mentioning beautiful coastlines in Africa, those popular islands — seychelles, zanzibar, malawi — take the crown. However, some beaches on this side of the continent are equally as breathtaking and put quite the effort in making the area as clean as possible.

From Ghana to The Gambia, check out the cleanest beaches in West Africa.

1. Beyin Beach, Ghana

Beyin Beach [Scanbird] Beyin Beach

2. Cap Skirring, Senegal

Cap Skirring is a wide white bay with a flat beach surrounded on one side by unspoilt dune vegetation and calm waves of the Atlantic Ocean on the other. While Casamance is one of Senegal’s most beautiful regions, Cap Skirring is one of the loveliest beaches in the region.

You can also take a boat up the river to a waterfall.

3 surprising signs of cheating in a relationship

There are actions that point to cheating which can be easily spotted.

Even we have listed here some of the signs of cheating.

But if you think you have seen all there is to spotting a cheating partner, you might want to think again. Here below, we list some behaviours that could lowkey be signs that your man is cheating on you.

1. He passes on date night

Stepping away from this, or even worse, declining intimacy, can be a red flag to watch out for in a relationship or marriage.

According to Dr. Nicole Zapien, a professor of Psychology in California, USA, “It signals a giving up or turning away.”

If he or she is cheating, it could be that their emotional or sexual needs are being met elsewhere, meaning they no longer need to get them from you.

2. Gut feeling

Your partner may cover their tracks well, they may still be doing all the relationship things and giving you the same level of exciting energy they’ve always given, but somewhere deep down, you just feel that you are being deceived or being played.

Ignoring your gut feeling could be dangerous sometimes [Credit: Madamenoire] Ignoring your gut feeling could be dangerous sometimes

There is no evidence and no sure way to pin the cheating on him or her, but the feeling just won’t go away. Zapien says to not ignore that feeling.

“We often ignore these intuitions only to have them confirmed later,” she says

3. Gifts and compliments

One would expect that this is one good sign of a partner who is in love and happy with their spouse but sometimes, that is not the case.

Compliments and regular gifts could be a way of trying to appease an unspoken guilt or trying to mask over behaviours that could be suspicious.

“Guilt can be a powerful motivator, and if the attraction of the affair is too strong to resist, guilt may be allayed by treating the unsuspecting partner more kindly than normal,” says Degges-White, another expert.

“The mindset is, ‘I can’t stop cheating, but I can be nicer to my spouse.’

The veteran rapper took to his Instagram page on Friday, August 17, 2018, where he took slammed the Inspector General of Police for detaining the journalist. According to him, the IGP will have countless sleepless nights over the arrest of Segun Ogundipe.

To the Journalist, it is sacrosanct, it is cardinal, it is the peak of his ethical responsibility to never disclose his source. Many have gone to jail and it is considered a badge of honour in the profession. Mr IGP, the young man, Samuel Ogundipe will give you hundreds of sleepless nights and super high blood pressure if you are waiting for him to expose his source.

“He would rather go to jail and when out, will be held in honour, promoted, sponsored by international organisations, remembered and used as a reference by students of journalism and journalists world over. Mr. IGP sir, what will you be remembered for beyond your transmission gaffe, will you even still be in the police force after this dispensation? What will you be remembered for? Putting a Journalist in jail? Disobeying the president? Oppression and suppression of truth? It sure doesn’t end here, Sir. Conscience is an open wound, Sir,” he wrote.

STREET TI TAKEOVER!! 7 hottest street artists right now.

‘Streets ti takeover’, a line from Reminisce’s 2015 hit single ‘Local Rappers’ and one that has proven to be prophetic every subsequent year.

Music has always found its home in the heart of anyone willing to listen irrespective of class or gender.

The language through which it is expressed is multi-faceted and never limited to coherency, but even in the place where translation is absent, the beauty lies in its understanding. Its language is of feeling and emotions and everyone gets it.

Zlatan doing the legwork in Zanku video (Youtube/Zlatan)

In melodies, rhythm, schemes and sound, music is the food for the soul through which many have been fed and longings have been filled.

In Nigeria, there has always been a ‘divide’, which has been more highlighted in recent times, and it comes in several forms; ‘Island vs Mainland’, ‘Posh vs street’, Cool vs Razz’, ‘Local or International’ but in this constant digression, music lovers have been better for it as they have led to a variety of wonderful music.

Street music, largely delivered in a mix of pidgin and indigenous language with a heavy dose of slangs has gradually seeped its way into mainstream consciousness with some of its songs becoming mega anthems and crossing over the divided lines.

The movement which began in places like Ajegunle, Okokomaiko and more recently Agege continues to thrive and gain wide acceptance.

Again in 2018, like earlier years, a new dance was introduced to drive the trend and from ‘Shaku Shaku’ which weaved its way late in 2017 and owned the first half of the year to ‘Zanku’ which got everyone doing the legwork in its final months, the street again ‘took over’ and in the new year, we are highlighting the seven top street artists right now heating up the scene.

Olamide

Badoo remains not just the ‘Voice of the streets’ (In his own words) but actually the King of the streets.

His songs are the most played at any mainland event, his name changes the mood at concerts and he has made major contributions to the scenes, one that has seen the Bariga boy become the poster artist for Nigeria’s most modern state.

Last year, Olamide’s songs like the shaku shaku driven ‘Science Student’ and ‘Motigbana’instantaneously delivered national anthems that burnt the clubs and dance-floors across the nation and when he released ‘Poverty Die’ late in the year, he added another banger to his many cult classics that have shaped the Pop culture in recent years.

Zlatan

Zlatan Ibile has been around for a while. Knocking on doors, but his music failed to properly connect with the wider audience and only appealed to his disciples on the streets. This, however, changed in 2018 with his feature on ‘Able God’ where he delivered an impressive verse.

The more evocative moment, however, came with ‘Zanku’ (Legwork), the infectious joint that served as the soundtrack to the new trending dance, Zanku.

And ever since, the story has flipped for Zlatan as everyone now wants a feature irrespective of whether you are elite or lower.

Small Doctor

In 2017, Small Doctor’s ‘Penalty’ was one of the biggest records of the year and while his controversy with the police provided his biggest highlights for the past year, his songs like ‘My People’ and ‘Remember’ strengthened his tight grip on the Agege scene with the large turnout at his homecoming concert at the Agege Township stadium confirming the love he enjoys.

Danny S

The Iju-Ishaga bred artist is another one that popped up on the industry radar in 2018 with the football inspired anthem, ‘Ege’ with the visuals shot at the Agege Stadium.

Danny S has followed this up with more banging singles and it was no surprise to see him feature at a number of events at the close of the year with the crowd calling and cheering his name.

Chinko Ekun

One thing that those on the streets are synonymous with is hustle and with hustlers, prayers come top of what they do on a daily, so when Chinko Ekun released ‘Able God’, where he pleaded that blessings and wealth be showered upon him,

it didn’t take long before the streets queued behind him as they all cried out to the words of ”No More Insufficient Funds.”

Oritshe Femi

You only need to play his songs at any event on the mainland to understand how the Taliban master is highly revered on these streets.

His name alone commands unbridled attention and his catalog of hits like, ‘Igbeyawo’‘Double Wahala’‘Mr Gomina’ are still loudly sung at every corner you turn.

Slimcase

Slimcase [Instagram/Slimcase] Slimcase [Instagram/Slimcase]

Making his emergence on the scene late in 2017 with the popularity of the ‘shaku shaku’ dance alongside fellow artist in Mr Real.

Slimcase, despite not having his own solo single become a mainstream hit, continued to attract recognition for the major part of 2018 while the latter faded, based off his exciting guest appearances, especially on records like ‘Diet’ and Wizkid’s ‘Gucci Snake.’

“Selena can be a delicate flower, especially because she has had constant medical struggles, but Justin’s engagement and quick marriage threw her off guard and hit her hard,” a source revealed.
