The Nigerian music industry is saturated with amazing talents and go-getters, there’s so much drive and most of the musicians are good exports internationally, but among them all, Davido stands out as the most dedicated musician in the industry. Apart from being a talent to be reckoned with, he is hardworking and relentless with his goal of doing great things with music in Nigeria, Africa and the world.

In a recent post on his social media, the Afro-pop singer put up a picture on his Instagram page which showed him in the studio working on some new music. He captioned it “Sleepless nights because this Album gon change our lives !! Gotta make this deadline!! 🤞🏾”.

Davido is arguably the biggest artist in Nigeria, and by extension, Africa at the momemt. But he didn’t get there by slacking or sitting on the fence and waiting for his family money to start off his career. No he pulled himself up by his bootstraps. It is evident in the kind of music he brings to the table, his performances, the new levels he keeps topping and his reputation in the industry. 1. Young and Winning

Davido was born on the 21st of December in 1992. That means he’s 26 years old, that puts him at a lower age than Wizkid (28), Olamide (30), Tiwa Savage (39), Yemi Alade(30) and any other Nigerian artist who is also making waves in the music Industry. At such a young age, he is worth about N20 billion naira according to 2019 statistics from Legit.ng

Contrary to popular belief that he is this wealthy because of his family wealth, Davido is hardworking and did not depend on his father’s resources alone, but only used it as a bedrock to build castles for himself. Referring to his elder brother, Adewale Adeleke’s statement in 2016 on this matter,  He said  “Forget that me and Davido’s father is a billionaire! We hustle like we still ain’t made it reason why we on top! We started this ish is 2011 it’s 2016 and we got a major record deal!”

An article on the fader.com, also talks about Davido’s musical beginnings. Telling his story from his days as a college student at Oakwood university, and how young Davido focused only on music and even dropped out of school. When he returned to Nigeria, his father had him arrested for not returning with the degree he was sent to get. He later made a deal with his father to attend a private university in Nigeria and honour his family by graduating. Davido’s previous manager, Kamal Ajiboye puts it better, he says  “People always say, ‘Oh, he’s just some rich kid.’ And he is, but they don’t realize that this music stuff—at first he did it alone.”

2.  Breaking new grounds since his first album

Davido released his first single in 2011, while he was still in school.  It was the first single from his debut album Omo Baba Olowo. That album contained 6 hot songs, one of his songs   “Back When” featured Naeto C, and made significant waves in the music industry. He did all these in 2011. That takes dedication and a lot of strength, clearly he’s been showing the world that this is his passion and he doesn’t need anyone to tell him that he needs to make it to the top.

In a short space of time, Davido  already had a huge fan base (14 to 28 year olds) in Nigeria, the US and the UK.  Then  Davido took Nigeria by storm with his next single, Dami Duro , which was said to be one of Nigeria’s top hits ever made. Later on the video came out. Davido and his management team, in collaboration with Clarence Peters, put together a first-class, never seen before type video, to back up the banger, Dami Duro. Not only did this video create major buzz around websites, TV stations and youtube, but was also said to be one of the best videos out of Nigeria at that time. Since then, he has been going all the way up. Even you can testify to this, except you’re a hater 😜😜

The “Assurance” crooner  has won  2 BET Awards, a Kora Award, a Channel O Music Video Award, a Ghana Music Award, a Nigeria Music Video Award, 2 MTV Africa Music Awards, 2 African Muzik Magazine Awards, 5 The Headies Awards, 7 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and 2 Dynamix All Youth Awards. What an achiever!

3. Successful record label at 23

In 2016, Davido founded the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) record label, few months after he signed with Sony Music. He signed Dremo and Mayorkun to the DMW record label and they are still signed till this day. In July of 2016, Davido signed a record deal with Sony’s RCA Records.  According to Pulse Nigeria, Davido said he renegotiated his contract with Sony due to creative control issues. That shows a high level of business acumen. Being dedication to a path also means you will be eager to garner all the knowledge needed to make the business thrive.

That isn’t even  his first label. When the star was 18 years old, he set up  his first record label, HKN, with his brother, Ade.  Davido says “… I like it when people are happy and when they can dance to my music! My mom liked to dance to music and I am inspired when I think of the kind of beats that would make her dance” As far back as that time His debut single “Back When” featuring Naeto C was already a testament to Davido’s ability and skill as a producer. He has also produced music for … Naeto C, Skales, Tiwa Savage and Sauce Kid.

 4.  Helped put  other musicians on the map

Davido has set down a legacy he will be forever remembered for, his personal achievement can’t be overstated and also has been able to put many Nigerian music stars on the world map. Most of those he put on the map has gone on to be mega stars of their own and some of them are even his rivals today.

The DMW boss even said: “In the beginning, some people never liked me because my dad had the bread. But I think over the years, they have (come) to understand the kind of person I am. I didn’t grow alone, There are so many artistes back home that have used my platform to grow.”

One of the people that Davido made famous are Teckno, Runtown, Humblesmith, Mc Galaxy, Lil Kesh, Mayorkun, Diamond Platnumz etc. The former Tripple MG Signee Tekno, had a song called  Holiday which featured Davido. Through this song, he managed to get the attention of the Nigerian audience and make it to big radio stations and more.

 

Another artist who benefited from Davido’s name was Runtown. The singer  gathered airplay when he released Party Like 1980 but his big break didn’t come until he got a verse from Davido. The then HKN chief laced Runtown’s biggest hit, Gallardo with one of his best verses and since then, the former Eric Many artistes has gone on to become a star of his own.

5.  Turns beef into business

Speaking of Wizkid, the whole world is aware of the contest for supremacy that fans have pitched against Wizkid and Davido. A smart business man like Davido has been able to turn coal into diamonds by applying the right amount of heat.  He took advantage of the rumour between himself and Wizkid. They  performed together at Dangote’s wedding, and at several concerts and events, both locally and internationally. He is good at channelling everything into  a business opportunity
