No fewer than 60 people have escaped with their lives in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, after one of the very popular hotels in the state, Metro View Hotel collapsed suddenly.
The popular hotel is located in the heart of the city close to the Presco Campus of the Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki.
According to reports from DAILY POST, Chief Austine Orji who is a member of the hotel management, while speaking with newsmen on behalf of Metro View Hotel, revealed that a crack had been noticed by them, affecting some of the pillars which were holding the building making them to cordon that part of the building off immediately. He said they immediately started renovations. He added that they were still in the process of renovation when the building gave way in a collapse.
Orji stressed that no life was lost in the unfortunate incident as all those who were lodged at the hotel during that period, were outside as they were attending a seminar when the building collapsed.
It has been revealed that, the Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has on Thursday, ordered for the immediate closure of the hotel through his Special Assistant (SA) on Capital Territory.
It was further stated that the Hotel would stay closed pending the outcome of an investigation bythe State government on the issue.
It was gathered that the Metro View Hotel was commissioned by a former governor of the state, Martin Elechi, on the 28th of May 2005.
